Alan Jackson - The Talkin' Song Repair Blues

The mechanic raised up from under my hood
He shook his head and said, "This ain't good
Your timin' belt's done shrunk one size too small
Those spark plug wires are a little too long
And your main prodsponder's nearly gone
Your injector ports are stripped and that ain't all"

"Your torque converter's runnin' low on torque
And that water pump's nearly down a quart
But we caught it all in time so you're in luck"
He said, "I've got the time and I've got the parts
Just give me the word and I'm ready to start
I think we can bring her in for eight hundred bucks"
But don't be downhearted, I can fix it for you, sonny
It won't take too long, it'll just take money

Agree. If LMT wanted to build the F22 again I am sure they could. They rather build the F35. It is called greed.

Actually to was Sen (D) Obey from Wisconsin that offered up the Amendment which forbade the export of the F-22. Without a way to scale up sales, the F-22 was doomed to low numbers; that along with the exaggerated costs and the over-hyped F-35 spelled the end of export.

No; it was just a matter of number$ and hatred of all things military (that actually work).

Its too expensive for the military to start up a F-22 line. And the tech has moved on since 1989 when the F-22 design began. The YF-23 was a better plane in many respects but lost the competition.

Only on the gardening thread. :-)

Remember who they hired and paid $6,000,000 for one year if memory serves me correctly?

His last name starts with C and he has no relevant experience in the aircraft or military industry.

Why would they do a thing like that?

Agree from all that I have found the YF-23 was better than the YF-22 except Trust vectoring.

Technology is always moving on. That does not make the F-35 able to beat the F-22 in combat.

I guess the real question tho is how does the F-35 fair against the JU-20 and Su-57.

That is if the JU-20 and Su-57 are ever fielded in significant quantities.

As of a week or two ago, the F-35 is being seen in a peer conflict as unfit for dog-fighting and will be relegated to drone control, if they ever figure the loyal wing man stuff out. Both the ju20 and the su57 will likely pact R7 missiles which outrange current US BVRs by 30-45 miles. The 35s cannon still cannot shoot straight. I think the ju20 mission is for AWACs and refulers, not to go head to head in dogfights. The 35s and others will have to guard the AWACs and refulers at least as a secondary mission

The 35 was meant and designed as a limited stealth bomb truck for Anti-Access to supplement the 22. It is not an air superiority fighter as the 22 was designed to be.

The yf23 initially cost more to maintain the the 22 which killed the 23 in the end for the cost conscious Brass

F35 was always intended for a Jack of all trades. Not as an air superiority fighter. That was the F22 primary role.

However it was to pricey. With less than 200 actually made and production lines shuttered for good. I wonder actually how many are flight ready. Replacement parts have to be hard to come by.

How long will the USAF be able to get replacement parts.

Most of what you said I said do we agree

Of the 180+ remaining, maybe 90 are Mission Capable at any given time with the other 90 in for maintenance etc, and the balance are hanger queens - rough estimate, but that’s the general picture.

Spare parts for most of the military is an issue acerbated by **congressional failure** to delegate adequate funds in their respective budgets, as well as the Brass’ desire for super expensive toys which, in the Navy’s case, generally have been a waste of 10s of billion$. The other services are not as extreme, but that’s the idea.
