I've been a big Pogues fan since the mid-80s, and have found myself in a number of (friendly) arguments over my assertion that Shane McGowan's lyrics are some of the finest Irish poetry since W.B. Yeats (who I consider one of the greatest poets in the English language). There is a poignancy and depth in McGowan's lyrics such as, "Broad Majestic Shannon," and, "Rainy Night in Soho," (to name but two) that have few equals in 20th century poetry or music.

As a songwriter, Bon Jovi isn't fit to tie McGowan's shoes, and Bon Jovi's presumptuousness in rewriting lyrics to fit his politically correct worldview is nothing but a sign of a horribly inflated ego.
