Just like their multi layered methods of cheating in elections, the democrats also employ varied methods to get republicans to betray their party and country. Through money deals, power deals, blackmail or threats, they can eliminate threats to their goal.

The best way the scenario would have played out for him is that a contingent set of electors were simply not selected based on a few sacrificial Republicans, Mitt et al.

Something is going to be revealed very soon which will change everything. What Trump wants is for people to be aligned against him now based on the information now, for the information to come out, and everyone to go, “wow, that changes everything, now I support Trump.”
If everyone aligns with Trump now, and then information comes out, and the public sees all the same battle lines, they will ignore the evidence, figuring it doesn’t change anything.
Trump is going to win. McConnell has to know, and so this is 95% likely just him adding a little theater, probably on Trump’s orders.
