The CHAOS-7 geomagnetic field model and observed changes in the South Atlantic Anomaly

Abstract
We present the CHAOS-7 model of the time-dependent near-Earth geomagnetic field between 1999 and 2020 based on magnetic field observations collected by the low-Earth orbit satellites Swarm, CryoSat-2, CHAMP, SAC-C and Ørsted, and on annual differences of monthly means of ground observatory measurements. The CHAOS-7 model consists of a time-dependent internal field up to spherical harmonic degree 20, a static internal field which merges to the LCS-1 lithospheric field model above degree 25, a model of the magnetospheric field and its induced counterpart, estimates of Euler angles describing the alignment of satellite vector magnetometers, and magnetometer calibration parameters for CryoSat-2. Only data from dark regions satisfying strict geomagnetic quiet-time criteria (including conditions on IMF Bz and By at all latitudes) were used in the field estimation.
Model parameters were estimated using an iteratively reweighted regularized least-squares procedure; regularization of the time-dependent internal field was relaxed at high spherical harmonic degree compared with previous versions of the CHAOS model. We use CHAOS-7 to investigate recent changes in the geomagnetic field, studying the evolution of the South Atlantic weak field anomaly and rapid field changes in the Pacific region since 2014. At Earth’s surface a secondary minimum of the South Atlantic Anomaly is now evident to the south west of Africa.
Green’s functions relating the core-mantle boundary radial field to the surface intensity show this feature is connected with the movement and evolution of a reversed flux feature under South Africa. The continuing growth in size and weakening of the main anomaly is linked to the westward motion and gathering of reversed flux under South America.
In the Pacific region at Earth’s surface between 2015 and 2018 a sign change has occurred in the second time derivative (acceleration) of the radial component of the field. This acceleration change took the form of a localized, east-west oriented, dipole.
It was clearly recorded on ground, for example at the magnetic observatory at Honolulu, and was seen in Swarm observations over an extended region in the central and western Pacific. Downward continuing to the core-mantle boundary, we find this event originated in field acceleration changes at low latitudes beneath the central and western Pacific in 2017.

I agree, you may find a good article in reference to just such an event which took place some thousands of years ago at VIEWZONE.COM where it was depicted by cave dwellers by drawings on cave walls in form of coronas commonly found by electrical discharges. Of course they did not know what it was or where it came from, they just used caves for cover.

Radio skip is when a radio transmission balances off the ionosphere, where the signal is refracted back to earth at a great distance.
The more intense the Sun is, the more sun spots are produce. Those sun spots causes the ionosphere to become more reflected to refract more signals back to earth. Note: with sunspots below 10 watts you signal just takes off into space. Most communications are conducted line of sight or via Ground Wave.
With high numbers over 200 sun spots the less power and less antenna you need to talk around the world. To operate with those high numbers you use higher frequency (21 Mhz to 54 Mhz, 15 to 6 meters) so you do not need a big antenna.
The last major solar cycle in the 90s, I operated a 10 Meter ham radio at 5 watts of power into a mag mount antenna on top of a truck. I was able to talk voice to Diego Garcia from Maine.
Some operators were able to hear their voice come back to them where the signal travel completely around the world.

That is true, in some areas where electric generators are used daily to run appliances, they would not even notice a difference. Fuel is not pumped from under ground like a gas station, it is delivered in fuel bladders and hand pumped.

More sun spots means more energy aim at Earth. Earth gets warmer because of Sun Spots. The last mini age was during a low energy cycle of the Sun that lasted a 100 years.

What will it be like when this happens to us? Perhaps the most dramatic evidence of what we can expect in 2012 comes from the most unlikely place — ancient petroglyphs! Ancient rock carvings from around the globe, created during the last solar “zap” 14,950 years ago, seem to illustrate a spectacular event that happened when the Earth was last hit by extremely high radiation. We are all familiar with the sparks that flash brightly when we discharge electrical current. Lightening is a good example. The northern lights are an example of how this “spark” of plasma can form luminous, electrically charged sheets or tubes at the Earth’s poles. The aurora, as it is called, occurs when mild energy from our Sun is trapped and dissipated by the Earth’s magnetic poles.
Extremely high energy — the type that would have caused the Moon glass and zapped the Earth — creates a more elaborate discharge. Physicists call it a z-pinch formation. The z-pinch has been extensively researched by a group headed by Anthony L. Peratt with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, NM and is described in his paper, Characteristics for the Occurrence of a High-Current Z-Pinch Aurora as Recorded in Antiquity Part II: Directionality and Source[5]. In this paper, Dr. Peratt illustrates the shape and characteristics of this high energy discharge on the Earth and shows thousands of petroglyph sites all over the globe where this z-pinch was observed and recorded in ancient carvings.
The term z-pinch originates from experiments where physicists made extremely high current to flow through thin wires that were arranged vertically in a tubular formation. They noticed that the energy quickly vaporized the wires, but the magnetic field generated by these paths remained and contained (or “pinched”) the stream of energy, collapsing the streams of energy toward the center of the tube-like configuration — called the z-axis. When the streams of energy converge, they form unique shapes that persist and can be observed as Birkeland elements, named for their discoverer.
