"Owner Adam Brackbill said the flavor leaves customers pleasantly surprised."

I get how this works. One time I was making chicken curry and realized I was out of vanilla beans, so I used vanilla extract. I way overestimated the amount and instead of getting just the slightest hint of vanilla that I wanted, there was a very strong essence left in the sauce.

While it wasn't exactly the way I like my curry, I had to admit that the flavors really complimented one another, so the next time I had vanilla ice cream, I decided to sprinkle some curry powder on it...and I've been eating it that way ever since. Sounds bizarre, but it definitely falls into the category of, "Don't knock it, 'til you've tried it!"

Exactly! Though I add ketchup also. Guldens mustard as always.

But no one ever offers sauerkraut for hot dogs.

On my honeymoon I was so excited the riverboat had a hot dog bar every day, including sauerkraut! Every single day I got one even though the dogs were HUGE like 2” diameter and 8” long. They were like Oscar Meyer seiners so it was extra palatable! Hate polish-sausage like dogs (red gristly) and Nathan’s is overrated.

I’m not overly picky, just do not care for cabbage, let alone sauerkraut.

What about black-eyed peas, greens, and cornbread?

My husband is highly picky. I’m medium picky. Mom said it is my curse for being picky myself as a child. But basically I hate peppers (esp green, even the flavor), don’t like tomatoes and onions as far as texture.

Sauerkraut can vary a lot like other foods, too. I’ve found so far that German kraut tends to be mild and too sweet for my taste. We grew up on Libby’s which is very sour and crunchy.

As for cabbage plain, it’s ok but doesn’t have much flavor alone. I much prefer beaten to death killer sour! I’ll eat corned beef and cabbage but it’s not passion!

ROFL oh, no, no one does! /s

I do, most do, and I love my Guldens on the other side. Sauerkraut absolutely overwhelming it on top if possible.

Yuck. I hate peppers, and tomatoes and relish yucky too.

Doesn’t need to be overwhelmed by all that stuff either. Like a Dagwood sandwich!

As far as rolls, people really should get to know Martin’s potatoe rolls. Not only for taste but practicality - they are big and tough and don’t fall apart like every other roll.

Only Martin’s is not. And it’s a simple bun, not a sub roll or Kaisers.

Martin’s is definitely great for hamburgers and pulled meat sandwiches. Nothing’s better as far as holding it together without being a gigantic hard bread.

My folks both grew up poor in Southern single-parent households, children of the Great Depression. Dad talked about supper often consisting of a piece of cornbread and a glass of milk. Of course, we speak of breakfast-dinner-supper, with supper the smallest of the daily meals.

One generation removed from no indoor plumbing, no electricity or gas, no central heat or cooling. People don’t realize how good we have it today.

I have my pork and sauerkraut started.

I will make the mashed potatoes later to finish the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch New Years good luck dinner.

Been making this for decades - since I moved out on my own.
