This is the new NASA, meaning I don’t have much confidence in them.
Let’s hope Biden doesn’t pull the plug and let the thing crash land.
Hoping for the best. And that China would only have beat us by a week.
There is an old international treaty that says no one country can claim a planet.
However, no-one should be surprised if China tossed the treaty in the trash, declared Mars their planet, and enforced it with mechanical drones.
All other countries would cry and whine and poop in their Bidet, and that would be that.
“Hoping for the best. And that China would only have beat us by a week.”
Due to lack of funding, lack of interest, and espionage, get used to seeing China beat us.
I hope all goes well.
Thx for posting. Love NASA and SpaceX stuff.
I hear you and do understand somewhat BUT they do deserve more credit than you are giving them.
Mars examples;
1) Mars Odyssey orbiter [2001] Spectrometers and thermal imager - Detecting Mars environment.
2) Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter [2006] Photo and RADAR observation of Mars.
3) Curiosity rover (Mars Science Laboratory) [2012] - surface exploration.
4) MAVEN orbiter (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) [2014] Science & Telecom Relay.
5) Insight lander (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) [2018] Mars interior exploration.
All of the above are currently operational and reporting. Not all are at 100% function, but lifespans are better than the original (minimum) estimations.
Go for landing, Perseverance, this Thursday, 18 February 2021, 1500 EST/2000 UTC! BUT PLEASE, not too hard!
That’s not gonna happen.
Perseverance is basically on autopilot all the way to the landing. Even if someone ordered everyone out of the JPL control room, Perseverance will land on its own, no interference required from the ground.
Now, if the government ordered Perseverance forcefully turned off...then, we have a problem. Even liberals who love science will go ape at that, maybe even call for Xiden’s head.
All China needs to do is develop very basic Von Neumann machines—and it is game over:

While the debunkers of the concept tend to discuss highly complex and huge machines, it would be much easier to develop a single-purpose, small, relatively simple self-replicating machine that could generate drones “controlling” a place like Mars.
NASA/JPL will be showing the landing on the Internet, mostly coverage and commentary from the JPL Control Room. I will be watching.
I hope to hear what I heard when Curiosity landed, “We are safely on Mars!”
They failed so many times that they haven’t even tried going to Mars since 1996 when Some Thing crashed into their probe.
Who cares? What I’m most concerned about is to know how well NASA is doing with their outreach program to muslims so they feel better about themselves. That’s what’s really important. </sarc>
You evidently have more faith in Liberal common sense then I do..
