When I used to go to San Diego all the time I’d always ask for an intermediate sedan and they’d always “upgrade” me to something like a Ford Excursion. No joke, not an exaggeration, I’d get monster SUVs. Southern Cal parking spots are not designed for these cars. I felt like I’d very carefully pull into a spot and then leave the windows open so they guy in the car next to me could crawl through my SUV to get into his car after I’d blocked his door from being able to be opened.
I can’t see Tiger walking the four miles a PGA tournament requires. If he tries again he will likely miss most cuts and embarrass himself. Best to leave fans with memories of his recent Master win.
“Or as they say in Nascar, he got to wreckin’”
He ran outta talent halfway through the corner.
Prayers for Tiger’s speedy recovery.
Nicklaus’ record will remain for a few more years.
No details yet. Given it was in the morning I’d guess distracted driving (i.e., on the phone/texting) rather than a substance abuse issue or nodding off. But who knows.
In conjunction with COVID.
He hit the median and at the speed he was going all hell broke loose. The car tumbled over and over for almost 500 feet, then up a hill before resting on its side.
Man, I still feel bad about Alex Zanardi. Back when I cared about that sort of stuff, the Target team (Scott & Alex) were my favorites. The bit where he cut across the grass to win that one race was ... amazing.
As for Mr. Woods, well, I’m not a golf fan, but I hope that he recovers enough to enjoy life and at least get in a round or two with Donald. :)
He probably hit the gas instead of the brakes after he hit the island and accelerated into the side of the hill.
Traffic video of his SUV shows he was following a minivan and was not speeding.
More likely is that he took his eyes off the road for a couple of seconds, then collided with the island.
Absence of skid marks and the heavy damage tells me that he mistakenly stepped on the gas instead of the brake and accelerated into the side of the hill.
“That the injuries occurred to the lower-right leg of Woods is not surprising, Jung said, because those typically happen when a driver is slamming on the brake, as opposed to the left leg, which might be off to the side.”
I had a great Dad as my driving teacher and drove standards for much of my life. I can’t believe the above sentence. That’s the way I drive, but most people don’t. It seems like most of the time that I have someone in the car with me, sooner or later the comment is made, “why is your left foot just sitting there, why don’t you use it on the brake.”
I always resist the urge to say, “because I don’t want to drive down the street with the accelerator and brake BOTH being depressed like so many of you idiots do.”
Odds are that those folks have never, ever driven a vehicle with a manual transmission.
You could tell he was an evil Trump supporter. Lester Holt spent WAY too much time on this last night, on the NBC Nightly News, trying to infer that Tiger must have done something wrong or illegal, but they hadn’t found anything yet, but they will keep investigating.
Prayers up for Tiger Woods to have a great recovery, at least such that he is not in pain.
Correct - although I have had people tell me that their high School drivers ed teacher told them to keep their feet on each pedal (accelerator and brake) so they can hit the brake “really fast.”
My response is always, “I hope all the brake repair shops send you a Christmas card every year.”
Thanks for the clarification. Strange, just a random accident. If he was under the influence I think we would have heard about that by now.
When I get into a car that is not my own, any car, I take extra time to adjust everything...seats, mirrors, I familiarize myself with the controls, the emergency brakes, wipers and as you said, when I put it into gear and also apply brakes very carefully. I too have had that sudden jerk to a stop when applying brakes you are unfamiliar with.
Before I put it in gear, I check out the visibility and all the blind spots.
But then again, I am one of those people who always backs into a spot or pulls through, because I feel that when you are driving, warmed up and oriented, driving in reverse to back in is safer and easier than coming out cold to your car, being distracted, and backing into a busy area.
Always better to nose out and go when you aren’t “warmed up” and oriented, rather than backing out and going.
Tiger grew up with similar 'you will be the greatest athlete ever!' pressure on him (though less extreme than Marinovitch, who was forced to crawl on balance beams until he learned to walk). Tiger also grew somewhat intoxicated on his first tastes of freedom but also frustrated with the constraints imposed by his massive celebrity status. Tiger at one point took up scuba diving and said it was his favorite hobby because it's the only time he's really alone and the fish never ask him for anything. No wonder he struggled with his own demons, as was heavily covered at the time.
It seemed as though he had gotten past that and was in a good place, bonding with his son and happy, maybe for the first time ever, truly. Now this. I wish him well.
PArents take heed: Don't try to force your kids to live your dreams out. They aren't your puppets, let them live their own dreams.
When I was learning to drive my dad said to me "parking lots are the riskiest places. Nobody knows what anyone else is going to do at any time. move carefully and look everywhere". Man, he was right on that one. Not risk of death (unless you get run over) but risk of a collision for sure.
Car he was driving has a black box...
ALL will be revealed.
