You are reminding me of another Samoyed story.
She was the only dog I ever had that when you yelled “come” she would run as fast as she could—away from me!
(The trick to get her to come was to start playing with a ball or something, particularly with other people. She wanted to part of the action.)
Guy I worked for some 50 years ago had a Samoyed. In the winter that dog would burrow into a snowdrift near the door to sleep. Come up the path and the snowdrift would explode with dog.
When I was a kid, my dad worked for a commercial glass company. He later owned it.
They were in a rough are of Detroit and break ins were common.
They invested a ton of money into a trained guard dog. Because it was a glass shop, they even bought leather booties for his feet. I recall $400 for the booties (late 1960’s. Big investment. One night someone broke in and tossed a steak laced with sleeping pills at the dog. Pal, the dog proceeded to enjoy his meal and take a nap.
Next thing you know, one of the employees had a brand new free dog.
I think the only thing that they can be reliably trained to do is run. Guard wise, there are only two times that I saw their protective instincts kick in.
Once, my son had had a number of persons he worked with at the house for a party. The large male husky was introduced to one man and started growling. I only saw a warning growl that one time from any of the huskies. After the party, my son found a camera stolen from the back room where the coats and stuff were kept.
Another time, an overnight storm knocked down a tall pine in the backyard. The neighbor, my son and I were out early the next morning to figger out how to get rid of the downed tree and repair the fences. A grand kid let the husky out and he saw his backyard in chaos and an unfamiliar person then took off in a running charge at the neighbor. The dog responded to our commands so we controlled him okay, got him back inside.
My home was a split level so you walked in the front door and the foyer split into an upstair and downstair. At the top of the stairs, this was the spot the three huskies selected as their sleeping spot. Anyone coming into the house late night would have been greeted by three large and scary looking dogs staring at them. I'd give them a pat on the head and they'd go back on station at the front door.
Lost my guard puppy yesterday, he was a Belgian Malinois, weighed 80LBS, and lived to the ripe old age of 16 years, eight months.
He was a serious dog, but friendly too, loved kids, he could lick the little ones strait in the face...terrified the postman.
Never lived in an empty house before, it is strange.
Dieter was his name.
A husky will show the robbers where the guns and money are hidden, if you give him a rawhide chew. Not a watchdog molecule in him.
Oh, I’m so sorry. He sounds like he hit the puppy lottery and lived a rich, full life. I hate that these wonderful beings live such short lives while evil wenches like Nancy Pelosi live 6 to 7 dog lives. Doesn’t seem fair.
