Those are some experiences...wow.

Yes...Olongapo was an eye-opener. A bit different what might have been seen in Saigon (I only landed at Da Nang on a MAC flight as we went home) but Olongapo...well, it WAS a bit debauched for certain. I could smell the Olongapo River from my house miles away.

You were probably at George Dewey Jr/Sr High School? Memories, for sure.

A lot of consequential things going on during that historic time, and you had a front row seat...(ahem...not as front row as SOME...:)

14 years old in Vietnam? Were you a Vietnamese citizen or a child that was brought along with the military?

Fascinating.

Some are just plain lucky.

Grandpa was never much one for physical labor, was an office guy, ate bacon and eggs everyday, smoked cigars and pipes nonstop, killed him at 98.

Yep not nearly as front row. I rode all over Saigon on my motorcycle or hitched on deuce and a half’s with GIs. Once I rode my little Honda onto the ramp at Ton Sah Nhut airbase and through a bunch of jets and got surrounded by ARVN troops .
They threw me and my motorcycle on the back of the truck and then threw me and it out at the front gate yelling at me in Vietnamese the whole time lol.
I was back the next day. The guards at the gate knew me so well they just waved me through when I pulled up !

I was a teenager here at home and the conduct of the democrats/ leftists during the war, topped off by their deliberate abandonment of the South Vietnamese after Nixon left office, educated me about leftists and formed me as a conservative.

Abandonment, heck, they INSISTED that the communists take over SV. I learned how they lie, how vicious and illogical they are. Maybe most important, I observed how they can cause the deaths of even millions (Cambodia) and sleep smugly at night.

I don’t think what we’re going through now is half as bad as their Vietnam/ Nixon behavior but back then they were more of a minority in society.

We have an evil ignorant traitor in John Kerry who should have been hung, not elevated to political power.

I always remember when the South Vietnamese were cut off and surrounded at An Loc and won a desperate battle against repeated communist tank assaults, the NYT wrote in their “news article”, that An Loc proved “even a rat will fight when it’s cornered”. That’s how much they hated our allies because they were our allies.

Met him in Destin Florida at a Circus. No kidding. I was around 14 at the time which would have made him 81. He was surprised a kid my age, wearing a Black Sabbath t-shirt, would know him. I told him that my Grandma and I watched all of his movies and my dad saw him in Nam. It was awesome.

My college roommate was from Jupiter, FL and had a summer waitress job. Bob Hope and Bing Crosby came in for breakfast once and left her a large tip. They were headed out to play golf.

Mr. GG2 is from CA. He and his dad used to do work on the Hope’s house. He said Dolores Hope was the nicest person in the world. Always bringing them snacks and drinks. Bob would stick his head around the door and say hi but was always real busy. Linda Gray was one of the Hope’s neighbors. She came over one day to show off her new Mustang and took Mr. GG2 for a ride.

I’ve told this before...

I met and shook the hand of the great Bob Hope in 1961. It was on the SS Liberte, New York to Le Havre (France), stopping at Southampton (UK).

I wonder what Bob Hope would think of today's society.

Little known fact: Bob Hope lived exactly 10 days longer than George Burns. Both died less than 2 months after turning 100.

Early on in the Internet, there were constantly false rumors of Bob Hope's death going around. So when it actually happened, I paid no attention to it, thinking it was another false rumor.

Funny. In Yokosuka, I was too young to have an ID card until right before we left, so I used to go off-base by crawling under the fence, and when I came back on base, I would just walk right in past the Marines guarding the gate.

One day, they grabbed me and brought me into a little shack and interrogated me because I didn't have an ID card. (It is the little white enclosure just to the right of the gate on the image)

So, they had three of them in their white hats, short sleeved khaki shirts, and blue trousers with the red stripe surrounding me as I sat in a chair. One of them said "You don't have an ID card, how do we know you aren't a spy?"

Things like that...they were bored, they knew fully who I was (Because my Dad was in charge of base security at the time...he worked in the building in the back with the white columns. My house was literally right behind the large building...it was an old Japanese military parachute hangars they converted into living spaces) and were just having fun. One of them asked me who won the 1967 World Series...:)

Then, when I lived in Subic, the "All Hands" beach was right next to the NAS Cubi Point runway, and I used to walk up on the tarmac and walk around all the planes, following pilots around as they did their pre-flights...:)

How times have changed...

I have written often about my grandmother who lived to be 106. That woman was always happy, smiling, friendly—even when “normal” people would be upset or angry.

One of my aunts was like that, cheerful attitude and always smiling to light up the room. She too made it to 106. (must be a secret they had :>)

On the other hand, I overheard two of my uncles talking when both were in their 70s. One, who I always thought had the harder life, tells the other, "Well it's been a tough, sometimes hard life, but we'd do it again if we could, wouldn't we?

The other, who I thought had the easier life, responded with a somber tone, "No, I wouldn't do it again, there was too much heartache, too much pain."

Through the years, I've often thought that statement was the saddest thing I ever heard. Both men experienced the death of their first wives and tragic experiences with their children.

I think the difference was attitude--that cheerfulness that your grandmother and my aunt had can make life so much easier and evidently longer.

John Kerry & Jane Fonda should be hung together from the same tree t the same time.

IF it were Pay Per View, it would raise millions for Veterans.

Kerry was in uniform that’s why in my opinion he’s an actual traitor.

That was a great insight into Bob Hope. I certainly hope it made you feel like a good person. Obviously needed the boost.
