So Colonial is paying tributes to the Barbary Pirates.
PING!
So how many people here actually back up their systems on a regular basis?? I’d bet most people don’t. So Imagine how tough it would be to rebuild your system, install all the software that was on and then test to make sure everything worked. Multiply that by a thousand and you can get some idea of what Colonial was up against.
I back up all my system on a monthly basis....but im the exception because I was a sys admin in a previous life...😀
Yes. And most people don’t read T&C’s either, but people do get bitten by it. I’ve been in IT since 1983 and still have been pretty lax about this stuff, but I did buy one of those multi-terabyte external drives finally a few years ago. This pipeline thing motivated me to do another backup. :)
Well Dumba$$, it isn’t about his tweeting out a solution
It’s about him acknowledging that there is a problem, Dumba$$
It’s about him meeting with colonial and other experts in the field to come up with a solution, Dumba$$.....
Kind of like when he met with the pharmaceutical companies to come up with a solution for covid19, Dumba$$I’ll
And at no time did I ever say he or anyone else would just walk in there, flip a switch and fix it, Dumba$$.
You seem to be one of those people that think.....Only the experts can come up with a solution so everyone else can STFU, Dumba$$
So, at the end of the day, unlike the current administration that acknowledges NOTHING, I’m thinking his track record proves that he would have offered any ASSISTANCE the company may have needed to resolve the situation as quickly as possible, Dumba$$
Make sure to renew your subscription to National Review so you can prove to everyone how smart you are.
Thats Mr. Dumba$$ to you pops....😎
My question is about how you stop the ransom attacks from gaining access in the future?
True.
Why use an EMP attack when any country with cyber criminals can take down our country and kill half our citizens in less than 3 months?
The FBI are justifiable spending all their time trying to find white men who have used the “N” word. Suggestion to the FBI - release WEEKLY statements about the number of people murdered by white supremacist...in Chicago, LA, New York, Atlanta etc. EVERY WEEK IN EVERY MAJOR CITY... DON’T HOLD BACK ... TELL US THE NUMBERS...
The Pentagon is doing ALMOST THE same - searching the country for the elusive people who look down on weird sex... might be ‘terrorists or white supremacists’ and God only knows what would happen if someone’s feelings were hurt.
The army’s trying to help... putting out ads... two mom’s raising a child, man who does it with his goat (animal love), people who self-identify as birds and want to poop right after they eat... ON NEWSPAPER without being forced to feel shame...
If the government wants to be serious about ransomware hackers, then they should just quietly remove them from the gene pool. It’s not like anyone would miss them.
If this were a Chinese company there would have been executions by now.
And given their anonymity, we don’t know who they are.
I’d like to treat them the same way that I’d like to treat ANTIFA.
Put out a PSA....if you know your kid is involved with these activities advise them to stop. For there may come a time when you will never be able to talk to or see them ever again. If you don’t know that your kid is involved in these types of activities, then if you’re a good parent, find out and advise them to stop.
Give them a week to get the message out. After that, Game On.
Absolutely
So, all those Bite-me officials who promised to have the pipeline back in operation by the end of the week were just blowing smoke? The company had to pay the blackmail to get back in operation?
I doubt these are kids that did this. This is a sophisticated type of attack. Your average script kiddie, as they are known as n the it world, just finds script someone has written to do say a DOS attack. To do what was done to Colonial is not the work kids. This was done by high end hackers who specialize in this type of attack. Working out of countries that don’t bother to watch this type of activity and in some cases are done under the purview of the host country. A lot of activity comes out of the Balkans.
All it takes is a laptop and a ‘Net connection. This is not a case of sending in a special forces team and grabbing the bad guys. These groups are mobile, they have networks of people so they can move about as needed.
So your idea of Game On won’t work....by the time somebody figures out where the attack came from the hackers are long gone. They obviously aren’t too worried about the authorities...why should they be.
I’m not arguing any of that. I don’t know much about this stuff other than I know a person(s) hacked into that system and shut it down. And where I am in Georgia, most of the gas stations are still empty.
But I will say, or at least HOPE, that the intelligence apparatus of the United States of America can catch these people. I realize it may not be the movies or maybe it is. I know it’s not as simple as Chloe directing Jack Bauer, in real time, where to go, but I also know that there is some pretty crazy stuff technological stuff out there.
**********************************************************************************
Working out of countries that don’t bother to watch this type of activity and in some cases are done under the purview of the host country.....isn’t that what China was caught doing a few years ago, where they had entire buildings filled with hackers, trying to get into everything.
And in reality, all it would take is someone like Soros or that Swedish billionaire to toss a few bucks at some folks to set them up and make sure the powers that be, in whatever country they’re in, keep their hands off.
The attack on the pipeline is an attack on the United States. The U.S. Government needs to find these hackers and terminate them.
Sheikh Mohammed: “Tough times create strong men, strong men create easy times. Easy times create weak men, weak men create tough times. Many won’t understand but you have to raise warriors, not parasites.”
Thanks.....
What has been happening in this country over the last 30-40 years is exactly this.....unfortunately
All good points. I would add that another risk factor is the off-shoring of IT services I’ve worked with a number of the large IT out-sourcing company in India. I found that, although a majority of the employees are decent people, there are two issues that create additional risks for US IT organizations:
- the loyalty of the employees is with their employer, which writes the paychecks and the employees do not always have the interest of the client as a priority; and
- these IT outsourcing companies often staff activities with the best profit margin as opposed to the most competent.
