Write the “meters” equivalent in “feet”, writer.

As for the damns on the river, as the old song goes, “Let them blow, let them blow, let them go”.

It would also solve the Wuhan city problem. Would clean out the “wet meat market”, the Wuhan Labs and Carry Outs, and everything in between.

Yes, except I’m not so sure where that typo crept in. “peoplbreke”?

Neither proofreading nor spell check nor good grades in English shall guarantee proper typing!

Anyway, obviously that was supposed to be “Well, yes, unless it can be arranged for most of the people downstream to escape harm but the gov’t to be washed away.”

More importantly, I’d add that significant flooding due to controlled releases @ 3 Gorges happens pretty regularly. Every few years, I’d say, including last year.

This is not just a “China” thing — it happens in the Mississippi / Missouri / Ohio River watershed. For example, if Lake Barkley and KY Lake are bursting at the seams, even if the Ohio and Mississippi @ Cairo are already at major flood stage, Barkley and KY Dam open up, which can cause major repercussions downstream. The farmers in the Birds Point Floodway in SEMO can attest to that...! (KABOOM!)

However, those repercussions are modest compared to, say, a major failure @ KY Dam, which could cause a true catastrophe at Calvert City and Paducah, maybe down to Cairo, and points in between.

Every time I hear something like this I’m like Kirk on the woe of the Klingons. “Let them die!”

Is it bad of me to hope the damn thing fails?

Yes it is. The flooding an mega-deaths will not affect the CCP one wit. Only the poor and those unable to get out of the way fast enough will die. No one cares about the millions dead as it’s just a rounding error. The rich and powerful will be long gone.

Production of millions of products some of which the West and the US depend on will no longer be made. This include the many foods we import from China. Better stock up on TP now.

The ordinary folk are not communist any more than they have to be to stay out of prison or worse - the party members are wealth and will be long gone before any flood water hits.

Chinese construction was faulted by the European commission that was asked to investigate - they were kicked out. The Dam rests against the canyon walls and is not anchored to them. Chinese concrete is notoriously poor in order to skim money off the construction costs - often cardboard is used as a filler, some times plaster.

Would the water tranfer from the lake be so great it would upset the balance of the whole world? To say nothing of weather patterns.

Prepper ping - China experiencing high waters and flooding

metmom : " Another year of flooding means another year of no harvest.
It will not end well."

More international demand for food resources may result in localized food scarcity.
Add to that the possibility of another supply chain breakdown and you have the makings of civil unrest,
a slowage of supplies we can deal with, but not a total breakdown !
Another one of the things we don't need right now is even a remote possibility of a truckers strike, which would add to the problem (no whisperings of trucker discontent),
just complaints of an insufficient numbers of qualified drivers for fuel and over the road (long haulers) of '18 wheelers '.
Overcome your 'Normalcy Bias' by staying alert. OODA loop !

A meter is roughly a yard (3.3 ft.).
10kph is about 6mph (add zeroes as required).

gas_dr :" I have watched some news programs and videos — the one that is in the thread from youtube simulating 3 gorges failure is unbelievable.
What are the chances that it would suffer failure?

My understanding is that the bulk of China's agricultural crops are located down stream of the Three Gorges Dam
which utilize the enriched and porous alluvial soils from upstream during the occasional, seasonal flooding.
The soils were deposited long before construction of the Three Gorges Dam.
I believe that engineers are concerned as there has already been some erosion of the embankment where the dam is located,
arising from last years devastating overflow and flooding.
Besides agricultural concerns, much of China's industrial manufacturing is also located within the flood plain, and would also be at risk, thus threatening the GDP.

I’m sure the fish would have a grand old time cleaning it up. Maybe restore the ecosystem destroyed by the Chinese.

Construction of megadams like three gorges is heavily dependent upon the foundational geology and the proper engineering and construction to tie into it. China has a poor reputation for construction quality. Remember a number of years back the new air port terminal at Beijing airport totally collapsed shortly after opening and even more recently the sky rise tower rocking and rolling without apparent reason. The concern is that in their hurry to construct the dam, they did inadequate foundation preparation and design. The mass of water behind the dam stresses this every time it fills to flood stage.
