I’ll add onme thing to this post that may be somewhat controversial. Belgium never should have existed. And how did that all that work out? Great for Leopold, bad for everyone else. And the Belgians have been taking it out on the rest of Europe ever since via the EU. How many people learned the history of the Holy Roman Empire in school? The first Reich to those of you in Rio Linda.

It’s one of the reasons I rail against us getting involved in WWI. Were the Germans (remember we’re not talking about Hitler here), really that much worse than the other European powers? I think they just didn’t want a new kid on the block.

The Germans were late to the game. They only unified after the 1870 war with France, which they won. The Germans always had an inferiority complex during the time and felt they were due more internationally. The first World War was their chance at claiming their stake.
It should be noted that during the time Germans were the predominate nationality in the United States.
Wilson did a lot of damage to this country and the world. Students of history would be well served by studying him.

A lot of mistakenly think the “Deutschland Über Alles” was about Germany taking over the world.
When Haydn wrote the lyrics, Germany wasn’t united, it was about the idea of a united Germany above all of the little Germanic kingdoms.
