Grizzlies have been gone in the Santa Cruz Mountains for over 125 years.
The area is pretty remote, the creek real low, there ain't a lot of water to gush these days.. but if it helps the coho, time to gogo.. It's a purty tiny dam structural-wise anyway, went down without a whimper.
That raises a question. Why haven't California liberals pushed for a Grizzly reintroduction program? Aren't grizzlies as good as wolves? Seems racist somehow.
In a century the salmon would’ve found a new path

I know you're half kidding but the California Grizzly (the kind portrayed on the State flag) was a unique sub-species of bear. After they killed the last one, there is no replacing it. Introduction of other bears to California would be like introducing polar bears. It probably would not fill whatever ecological niche Ursus arctos californicus did.
You think the CA Grizzly was significantly different in behavior and eating habits than other grizzlies? All bears are pretty much omnivorous.
With the possible exception of Polar Bears which are probably only carnivores owing solely to the fact that they have no choice. And of course Panda Bears, the vegans of the bear family.
When I was offered a “free” rain barrel by the County of Alameda, in California, I had to agree that Obama could inspect it any time he wanted to. I kid you not.
