Not everyone who “sees the elephant” survives.

As a rule, wild Indian elements can be raised from a young age to be generally friendly and helpful. Not so much African elephants, who are much wilder in disposition.

“The brown stuff between elephants toes? Slow pygmies.”

Seeing wild animals is exciting but when you realize at that very moment that there is NOTHING standing in the way of a 4,000lb hippo and you reality sets in. It happened the first time we were charged by a hippo and a group of elephants in the same day.

You don't run from an elephant bull...but it's OK to run from a female.

“You don’t run from an elephant bull...”

If you stand your ground, you’ll still die, but at least you’ll die with dignity!

I’m sure of that.

Read a game hunter died when a group of elephants charged....another hunter shot one elephant and the animal fell on him killing him almost instantly. As is said though...he died doing what he loved.

I had my scary moment at Big Bend National Park in West Texas.

My wife and I decided to get away from the rest of the tourists and go on a rarely used trail that we saw in a hiking guide we were using. We got into a high elevation remote area.

I started reading to her from the tour book about the different animals we would see on the trail.

Suddenly she grabs me and whispers “stop”.

We were staring into the eyes of a bear right in the middle of the trail—no more than five feet away—my loud curse word (that shall not be repeated here) scared him off.

;-)

LOL, I am not surprised at all. Out of the 3 professional hunters who were running our camp, one had been shot by another hunter, and the other 2 had been mauled by hippos. Another professional hunter had his scalp mauled by a lion, he was lucky to survive. You don’t hear about it much but usually one hunter is killed every year.

I believe it!

One of my all time favorite movies is “ Out of Africa” simply for the music, scenery, animals and the challenges she faced with the tribal people. I also dreamed of flying myself over the land seeing all the animals from above which is shy I also liked the movie “Shadow of the Sun”. Both were done in the English eras of aristocracy.......and I had married into a family similar though on a much smaller scale, powerful people nonetheless. So it was easy to identify with both women though both were far much more ‘stuffy’ than I.

At any rate I will always love watching these videos and hearing people’s stories of their ventures in Africa. So fascinating and intriguing...despite the real dangers.

An African elephant weighs about 15,000 pounds, give or take.

That's about 7 tons, again give or take a few thousand pounds.

A huge, highly intelligent wild animal with a very aggressively defensive nature and one that can run surprisingly fast and this clown just basically walked right into it's living room. The animal no doubt either heard or picked up the scent of these two idiots long before the humans even knew they were there and the thing said "Uh oh, something's coming this way, gear up''. Yeah. This guy gets the Darwin Award.

Wow. I like that business model.

I think I’ll start a side show.

I’ll have “The Worlds Smallest Giant’’ and “The Worlds Tallest Midget’’.

I’ll rent you the space next to me next summer.

Just don’t eat your star attraction like I did.

I’ve never had any real encounter with large, wild, higher order mammals, I don’t live in that kind of an area.

I do know however the simple fact is despite the size of bison,
bears, elks, elephants, what ever the species of large animals they are amazingly powerful and fast moving but also can be very quiet, they can stay hidden until, as you and your wife found out suddenly right they’re right there on top of you or you suddenly come face to face with them and you weren’t even aware that they were there.

But they always seem to know you are. They can hear or smell you coming from a long way off.
