Cream cheese is the latest hard-to-come-by grocery item in a year of shortages. | |

I’m in the DC area and started to notice the shortage here about a week ago.

Kraft Philadelphia 8 oz block = $1.98
Walmart Great Value 8 oz block = 84 cents
Savings for the Great Value brand at 4 blocks per recipe = $4.56
Save even more making your own yogurt. Drain it and you’ve got Greek yogurt which can be substituted for the cream cheese.

"Who makes cheesecake for Christmas?................."
I used to make it every year, and take it to my friend's as they had lots of company for Christmas. I found a recipe for New York Style Cheesecake years ago that requires a pint of sour cream, 3 packages of cream cheese, juice of half a lemon, 6 eggs separated, etc. You beat the egg whites at the end, and fold them in. It's what gives the cheese cake its height and smoothness. You have to bake it in the oven for an hour, turn the oven off, and leave it for an hour, then put it in your fridge overnight before you serve it. Never had a complaint. I like my cheese cake with caramel sauce.

"I haven’t seen a shortage of cream cheese at our local stores."
I like Walmart's whipped cream cheese in the large tub. They had none for a long time. Ended up buying a different brand in the meantime, but fortunately, they've had it lately. They were out of Land-o-Lakes whipped butter in the tub for a while too.

Yep, they create a fake shortage and get recipe ideas to publish.
Just like Hershey suddenly has a chocolate shortage and price hike right before Easter every year.

"Walmart carries a Cheesecake Factory in the bakery freezer with the ice cream cakes. About $15, but worth every bite."
I bought one of those from Walmart, but all they had was the small size. Found that B.J.'s Wholesale Club has Cheesecake Factory in the large size for about the same price.

You may be right. Blinded by all that sunshine. I can eat cheesecake all year round, but I don't make it anymore because it's just me, so I buy Cheesecake Factory's cheesecakes. They satisfy my craving.
