Exactly. It has a completely different aesthetic than the 1961 film.
Sitting with a crowd at an entertainment venue just doesn’t appeal to me anymore. Getting old and crotchety.
Probably missing out on a lot, but I’ve been there done that.
I love musicals. Yes, I know that’s geeky.
I enjoyed the original movie and saw a revival production on stage (traveling Broadway) in the 90s.
My high school BFF saw this over the weekend and she liked it. I was avoiding it because I thought it might be in-your-face-woke, but maybe I’ll give it a shot.
Yeah I was shocked by how respectful it was of the essence of the original material. Great filmmaking too.
People just love that Marvel crap at the theater. That’s almost all they show up for.
I’m going later this month. Sondheim visited the set extensively before he died and gave it a thumbs up. It doesn’t surprise me that it isn’t doing well, but I prefer an empty theater. The music and lyrics are complex and pop music today is so simple and bland that it’s easy to see why this isn’t resonating.
Yeah, if only they did a version with antifa and BLM fighting for the chance to beat up some cops and loot and burn some stores.
I never understood that long ingrained criticism of all Musicals, that they were somehow ‘gay’. Why? Good music, choreography, performance and a solid storyline is good entertainment to me, period. I never let that black mark stop me from appreciating popular music.
Who cares ‘what the neighbors might think’ about it. Most people don’t pay that close attention anyway, they simply repeat whatever reaction they expect their friends to have. Fine. To each his own entertainment.
I’ve heard really good things about it. Cal Thomas raves about it. I think the problem is people don’t seem generally interested in musicals these days. And most of us have gotten used to just staying home and waiting until it comes out as a rental on streaming services. Movie theaters are just too expensive and the only movies with any life left in them are the big blockbusters like Spiderman, which is a great movie BTW.
The “Musicals Are Gay” thing started in the 70s when it came out just how many people in that sphere were gay. It was underground before. Also theater music stopped being Top 40 stuff.
Wasn’t WSS the movie that had the gang members saying “Micks, spicks, wops”?
Did they leave that in the new one?
;D
Because American audiences must have forced on them extended sections of the film in Spanish, without subtitles.
Otherwise, it would be so...
His films get bad reviews just as often.
Switchblades were terrifying cool in the 60’s. No one cares about them anymore.
There is very little of that actually. It’s been exaggerated by people who haven’t seen the film.
If Gene Kelly heard that, he’d slug you! ;)
The story of the girl who plays Maria in this film is remarkable. A high school student with no film or TV experience who responded to an open audition call on Twitter and ended getting the part. She asked Spielberg if she could still do her senior year high school musical and he shuffled the schedule around to facilitate that.
