Hades, her uncle, kidnapped and raped her. Persephone refused to eat and drink in the underworld. Ceres, her mother, made all the plants on earth die until her daughter was returned. Zeus ordered Hades to return Persephone to Ceres, but Persephone, distracted by the joy of returning to earth, ate a few pomegranate seeds, and this was taken for partial consent. Persephone must return to Hades for a few months every year, Ceres grieves, the plants die, and winter is here.
Not a good backstory for a name.
You mean because the poem is called Daddy, it was actually meant as an attack on her mother?
In high school we had to watch the Greek movie Iphigenia, and all I can remember is the title character frolicing in green hills and her name being repeatedly called ad a super high volume.
You must have been precocious to know that much Greek mythology when you were still the age of playing with dolls.
I have no idea how you came to that conclusion.
You said the poem was about an unresolved Electra Complex didn’t you?
Actually, that little note about Sylvia Plath was not a part of the article. I included it as a sort of historic reference attached to that name Electra. I may have pulled the focus too far from the original topic of Ms Persephone.
I didn’t take her remarks as an ‘attack’ on her Mom, more a mild exasperation one often feels about someone close to you that does weird things.
Nothing led me to believe this young girl has an Electra Complex. I chose to dwell on that name because I have heard it in use before.
Another name from Greek myths that I have heard in use would be Medea. The story of Medea describes a woman of great passion and extreme jealousies. She even kills her children at one point, in order to punish her lover who had left her for someone new. That name was taken by Medea Benjamin, the former director of Code Pink.
I think it was fourth grade when we covered Greek and Roman mythology. I still had dolls even though I wasn’t much of a doll person overall.
Elizabeth Peters fans think of Radcliffe “Another shirt ruined!” Emerson. :-)
(in a loud, whiny voice) MOMMMMM!
lol!
I knew a guy that named his first daughter, Alpha, his second daughter, Beta and his third and last child, also a daughter, Omega.
PS......he wasn’t Greek but Scandanavian
