His is one hell of a story. Damn near 30 years in isolation, still loyal to his cause. Hiroo Onoda was one hell of a man and a loyal soldier. I for one would pay real money to see an honest account of this man’s life.
I just hope the film hasn’t been embellished with enough 21st century crap as to make it unwatchable.
.
Hero???
Hogwash!
I think they were pretty true to the actual reality. They even featured Onoda's comrade-in-arms, the black, trans cross-dresser corporal, Shaquan Kirishima.
He told the student who found him that even if he believed the war was over, he could not surrender unless the officer who gave him his orders to go to the island and prep for the return of the fleet personally ordered him to so do.
The student told him that he might easily be dead. Onoda said “Ok, then I will die here if that is the case”.
The former commander was located and taken to the jungle where he told him the war was over and ordered him to surrender.
Onoda asked the student to give him a moment alone with his commander. When the student was gone, he asked the commander for the real scoop, thinking that was all just a show.
Then he finally realized it was true. His rifle and ammo were carefully maintained.
Amazing book. “No Surrender” by Hiroo Onoda

Holdout Registry. Searchable by island or area, or by year.
Fascinating reading.
The hardcore Covid mask-wearers are starting to remind me of these guys.
Think about it - the commander ordered this guy to stay behind, than had to be dragged down there 30 years later to countermand the order.
Onoda should have been able to get 30 years of azz-kicking on that guy for leaving him behind.
“depredations reputedly lasted until 1924 in the southwesf and 1933 in Mexico. I wouldn’t fully trust some of those areas to this day.”
And you aren’t wrong. In some of those lonely places, getting robbed and killed by an Indian is something that can happen. That is exactly what happened in the old days. But if it’s a comfort, today we would call it a “crime” rather than “renegade Indian problems”.
The face diaper brigades are every bit as fanatic as the Japs were back then! I tell my son they’re doing us a favor by making themselves known!
How did he become a hero by hiding in the jungle for thirty years? Shouldn’t he have been performing cute little commando raids?
Drafted soldier who did his duty and served his country with honor. Japanese troops were notorious for their terrific fighting skills and barbarity. We don’t know where this man fell on the spectrum but I tend to give the ordinary soldier their due no matter the country unless proven otherwise.
Yup, he continued killing innocent people playing commando doing nothing for a cause that became irrelevant decades ago and he knew it. Not really a very admirable thing.
Hiroo is a hero

Supernova in the East.
If you download torrents of movies, you can find this movie around if you look.
Mao changed the narrative to claim the CCP did it all by themselves.
If he was around today he would still wear a mask for 30 years....
How do you say nutburger in Japanese?
