On a related note, I have the same issues with digital cooking thermometers. They are so all over the place with their readings that they are essentially useless.

I've had to go back to the old-fashioned but reliable cooking thermometers.

Mercury-filled glass rectal thermometers for ME!

My uncle was in a large hospital ward where the nurses were walking down a row of beds to record temperatures. As the nurse attempted to put the thermometer in his mouth, he immediately objected. What's wrong she asked? I just removed it from 100% alcohol. My uncle: yes, but you just pulled it out of 100% ass. It's not going in my mouth.

I use mine for some things. Canning, etc. Never had a problem. Might try the ribs thing.

There actually is a ‘difference’.

Bulb shape

Since rectal tissues are fragile and easily ripped, rectal thermometers have a short, blunt, slightly rounded tip that reduces the risk of a rectal puncture or tear.

Oral thermometers have longer, thinner tips as a long and slender bulb exposes as much mercury surface area as possible. Exposing a larger surface area aids in obtaining an accurate temperature more quickly.

We had some friends over for BBQ one time and we cooked the ribs in the pressure cooker, then immediately put them on a baking pan, poured the sweet BBQ sauce over them and baked them in the oven until the sauce was bubbly and they were the hit of the show!.................

I still use one my parents used on me when I was a child in the 60’s-70’s. Don’t have to worry about batteries and accuracy.
