My story will sound like an urban legend and who knows, but a young married couple I knew well in the late 1960s had a close friend who had worked up and up in the layers of Scientology.

Then she changed her mind and wanted out. They told her not to act like that and she was too far up in the hierarchy now and people do not just quit due to the inner secrets the masses shouldn’t know about.

My friends said a few weeks later the young woman was found incoherent and had been taken to a mental health facility because she had lost all ability to think or communicate. Unsolved how that happened. She apparently never got out of that state.

I trust the couple for telling what they knew-—they didn’t make up stories that I know of. This one was weird.

Have to? As in told to? No, but as I got further in I had less time to socialize, and less in common with people who weren’t in. I more drifted away.

If any of my pre-scn friend were openly hostile to the church, the ethics officer would not have hesitated to order me to disconnect.

Once I was properly routed out they have no say over who I could associate with, although they could have made members disconnect from me. If they did, I didn’t notice.

I had a life to re-assemble...

When I was in college, I met a really good looking girl who was into Scientology, I went to one of their information meetings with her. I decided that she was a flake and quit hanging out with her shortly after that.
I received their crap for a couple of years, stuff showed up daily. I called them asking to get off their mailing list, no luck. My sister came up with a solution. We collected their junk for a month into a large Manila envelope. We addressed it to their headquarters in LA and put the return address to one of their offices in San Francisco. I then put a 5 cent stamp on it and dropped it in the mail at one of the blue boxes. I quit getting their crap very shortly after.

Leah has a podcast (Scientology: Fair Game) along with Mike Rinder. I listened to it for quite a while & finally moved on - having a hard time listening to the details of humans being treated in very inhuman ways. The details of “life” in Scientology were just shocking and the stories of those trying to get out (or should I say ‘escape’) were hair-raising. The control, the surveillance, harassment .... incredible & I’ll leave it at that.

I’m glad you were able to get out.

It was a huge mistake declaring Scientology to be a religion and therefore all their proceeds are tax exempt.

The tax exemption was the result of Scientologist badgering members of Congress and the IRS until they finally gave in.

Badgering or bribing?

So, have you managed to free your mind from hidden influences yet?

(Briefly looked at that thread, and remembered it from years ago.)

Funny thing happened last night, I went out with some friends to the local Chinese place, and they had the “game” playing on the telly. After the game ended, this curious news show came on, and the lady blathering about the dangers of Russians and some nuclear plant and stuff.

It struck me how unctuous she sounded, and she reminded me somehow of a character from a movie I never watched, but I read the book. What was that name ...

Oh, Delores Umbridge or something like that. Yeah, that was the character.

I am rather convinced that if one truly wants to free one’s mind of unwanted influences, rejecting the mass media is one of the first steps...

Hope your escape from the ology is still going well.
