There’s no debate. You either recognize Die Hard as a great Christmas movie. Or you’re a sad person. It’s like the cilantro gene, some people just have to live a sad life.

Agreed. Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Christ, not murder and mayhem. Just because it happens at Christmas doesn’t make it a Christmas themed movie.

Still, it’s one of my favorites.

Perhaps “The Girl Can’t Help It” is a Christmas movie because it has scenes set during Christmas time. One of the song titles mentioned is “No Lights on the Christmas Tree, Mama. They’re Using the Electric Chair Tonight.”

It’s not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from the Nakatomi building.

Die Hard is a lot like Home Alone.

Maybe Kevin grew up to be McClain.

Good guy is having a tiff with family.

Ends up by himself against a gang of theives. Does lots of clever tricks.

Thief leader pretends to be something else but really is just stealing.

I’m so sick of this dumb argument. This all started because some Americans thought it would be avant garde to start thinking of Die Hard as a Christmas movie to watch during family gatherings for the holiday.

Don't be such a Debbie downer, this debate is like the debate "about which came first the chicken or the egg?"

Well anyway, Merry Christmas, Mr. Grinch.

As I understand it Zulu was a very popular movie in the UK during Christmas break. Not sure about that anymore. I do watch Dr.Who Christmas episodes during the holidays.

It’s not avant garde, it’s recognizing there’s more than one way to do things. My mom used to force feed me those damn claymation movies every year, even into my teens. I hated them. From day 1 I thought the stories were dumb and I never wanted to watch them again. But they had to be viewed every freaking Christmas, and any word against them made me Scrooge. Then of course you get into the fact that America only listens to be the bad Christmas music, seemingly deliberately. How else to explain when a “new” awful Christmas song hits that every single person hates it immediately becomes part of the heavy rotation. There’s a whole freaking social media game about avoiding Wham’s Last Christmas, nobody likes that song, and yet it’s on every freaking station and in every freaking store.

So because of all this I really hated Christmas. To me it was just a time of year to be force fed the worst “entertainment” available, and you were a bad person if you dared say anything against it. Then one day I’m having a smoke with a friend and co-worker, an evangelical Christian who turned me onto FR, around this time of year and he says “so are you watching Die Hard this weekend?” “Why would I watch Die Hard?” “Well it’s Christmas time, and it’s a Christmas movie.” Blank stare. “You’ve seen Die Hard right?” “Of course, one of the most technically perfect action movies ever made.” “And you know when it happens?” “Yeah, office Christmas party.” “There you go, it’s a Christmas movie.”

Blew my freaking mind. The idea that you can watch a GOOD movie for Christmas! Insane. And over the next few years I started collecting up those kind of “different” Christmas movies (Gremlins, Trading Places, Bad Santa when that came out, Rare Exports). And that “other” Christmas music (the Southpark album, John Prine, random Tull, of course Fairytale of New York). And now I absolutely adore Christmas. Yeah it’s not the Christmas of my mother. Or most anybody in America. But it’s fun. And I watch great movies and listen to great music. Nobody is trying to be experimental, we’re just realizing we can define our own version of the holiday, one that we enjoy, one that isn’t torture.

Not much of a debate.

It's mostly just people who liked or loved (or hated) Die Hard and will use any excuse to talk about it.

The debate is largely a vehicle to troll people who don’t think Hans Gruber hurtling off Nakatomi tower is a Christmassy sort of thing. Of course it’s a Christmas movie - when McClane gets his hands on a SMG he says, “Now I have a machine gun, Ho Ho Ho!” If that’s not the spirit of the season I just don’t know what is.

Sorry I disagree with you. Die Hard Christmas most certainly was Avant Garde, now it’s just a pathetic cliche every time I read some idiot talk about how it’s their family Christmas ‘tradition’ to watch Die Hard.

It’s basically the Tattoo in movie form. Once everybody does it, all the sudden it seems rather pathetic, and shows rather poor judgment.

I pretty much agree with you. Die Hard was an action movie that happened at the XMAS season. End of story. It is not really a XMAS movie, it’s a violent action movie and that is it. Even Bruce Willis said that.

Sorry but you’re wrong. You’re now trying to tell me what I think Why I like something. That’s just pathetic ego.

Out here in reality we aren’t all the same. Some people just aren’t cut out for the usual stuff.

Nothing avant garde about having a family tradition of watching Die Hard. I watch it every year while wrapping presents. Cause I love the movie, and I’ve seen it enough to have basically memorized it. The goal is to finish before the twinkie scene, and I also have twinkies to eat then.

It’s basically that you’re judgy and wrong. The poor judgement here is YOU. Here’s the right thing for you to do: recognize that people are different, and some of them will enjoy something you don’t.

No. Actually I’m pointing out that YOU’RE taking this way too personally. Nobody is condemning you for not watching Die Hard as a Christmas movie. But YOU feel the need to condemn others for doing that. Somewhere along the lines your personal sense of self worth got tied up in judging people, yucking their yums, and insisting all who deviate from you must be pathetic avant gardes. I’m pointing out to you that’s a sad pathetic way to live your life.

I HOPE you have movies you love to watch for Christmas, and you get to watch all of them, with the people you love, and it’s awesome for you. I don’t care what the movies are. I don’t care if I’d consider them Christmas movies. I don’t care if I’d consider them good. The important part is that YOU enjoy it.

And I hope some day you can see yourself clear to wishing the same for others, instead of having to judge.

And you still have to be needless confrontational. Sad. Well, have being rude for no good reason. I have nice people to spend time with.
