“Rigged election, why not rigged football games”
More of a question of why. I heard just a couple of weeks ago that sports are considered entertainment therefore they can legally rig a game without repercussions. I’m sure gamblers are ticked off about it, but that’s the gist of the conversations I was hearing on media.
Who?
State Farm and Subway may have some input.
I guess some folks don’t understand the word sarcastic.
Super Bowl XL was rigged..
Not being sarcastic..
I would take this with a grain of salt. Arian was a talented RB, but he was coming up with some off the wall stuff even in college at Tennessee.
He is a bit of an odd duck.
but its a gigantic money making entertainment business....of course they have a narrative....
Except they don’t need a narrative. Random positive reinforcement is the most the addictive reward system. So results that are largely random (nobody ever wants to admit how much sports success is based on weird bounces and injuries) will keep the audience hooked way better than any narrative. You can see it with all the other forms of gambling. Look at people on the slots, pushing the button, pushing the button, pushing the button, all for that random occasional win.
And really, if things were scripted don’t you think the most popular teams in the league would be winning most of the Super Bowls? And certainly the most popular team wouldn’t be absent from the big one for 25 years and counting.
“ Rigged and scripted are not the same thing are they?”
Kind of like how “directed evolution” is hardly the same as “gain of function”.
Cherry, as much as they might make if they turned the NFL into Roller Derby or UWW, it wouldn’t come close to what they’re making now with pro football as a legitimate competitive sport.
The allegation doesn’t hold together. They would be shooting themselves in the foot. Doesn’t make sense.
They sure draw a lot of penalties from the opposing teams
Question...would they still be in the league without profit sharing?
20 years with a losing record and the smallest stadium doesnt encourage a lot of fans
Today? If you're an NFL official, you get better jobs if you make the "right" calls. You get perks. So the favored teams and the stars get all the calls.
So there, you sort of have a script. Even though it's kind of indirect.
5 or 6 bad calls in a close game, there's no way that you can win the game. It's unlikely that your team is as dominant as the 1985 Bears so you can't just blow out your team in every game. Parity rules the game. So you can see how this is a problem.
I think it has to do that there's a big fan base in Philly and they do well with the ratings. Jalen Hurts get to benefit from it.
Plus Hurts has Alabama and Oklahoma fans rooting for him.
Good for business. That's the thing. NFL is becoming WWE. Vince McMahon should be their commissioner.
Why would the NFL want the revenue cut of becoming the WWE? Really there’s just no margin there. Randomness is the altar sports is built on, that’s where the addiction comes from, that’s where the money comes from. Here let’s look at the revenue of the 4 “bigs”:
NHL $6.1B
NBA $10B
MLB $11B
NFL $17B
And then the scripted “sports entertainment” empire:
WWE $1B
Even the lowly “jazz of sports” NHL makes 6 times as much money as the WWE. Scripting is not the path to revenue. Randomness is.
The games have been sold out since 1959. They expanded Lambeau a couple of times so it is very competitive, plus with “Titletown” it is a year-round destination. It is a very cool place to visit, and a game there is unlike anyplace else. Period. (The Season Tix list is the most futile one to be on in the world..I know, we are in it.)
The allegation doesn’t hold together. They would be shooting themselves in the foot. Doesn’t make sense.
The embezzler never thinks he'll get caught.
There’s no motivation to embezzle. Only risking their $zillion empire.
