If they don’t declare enough in tips to meet the minimum wage, they are paid the difference to ensure they make minimum wage for time worked.

Actually, servers are exempt from minimum wage laws in most jurisdictions.

Not really. There is a low federal base minimum wage ($2.13/hr) for tipped workers. More importantly, the employer must make up any difference to reach the standard federal minimum wage ($7.25/hr) or the state/local minimum wage, whichever is greater, after tips are accounted for.

Last time I ate out, a 15% tip wasn’t even offered, it was 20%, 25%, or 30%. So I did the easiest thing, took the 20% number and divided it in half. Close enough, I guess.

If you divide the 30 percent figure by 2, it’s just as easy and isn’t just “close enough” — it’s exactly 15 percent.

On the one hand, I pay taxes on whatever money I pay in tips.
OTOH, ... I like to use cash for the tip jar. I guess it is my form of virtue signaling.
BTW - you servers need to encourage cash tips ... even a smile or head nod could encourage more of this in the future. Just my opinion.

Yet the IRS miss’s every one’s “tips”in the Biden family...

Comer says ‘6 or 7 Biden family members’ may have been involved in overseas business schemes

Makes perfect sense. Hire thousands of agents to go after 1.6B in unreported tips, or about 300M in revenue IF they get it all.
doesn’t seem worth it in a world with trillion dollar bank bailouts.

Better yet, pay cash for the entire bill.

Indeed. It saves the business the processing fees

“I’m tired of paying for the moochers.”

Lol.

Do you know any wealthy people—truly wealthy people?

They hire world class tax attorneys whose job it is to make them into stunningly successful tax moochers.

They also contribute money to the local congress critter to keep their favorite tax loopholes.

You will always be paying for the moochers—until you get to be one of the very wealthy folks.

Then you will be sipping fancy wine with them at art galleries along with the other moochers.

You can blame Joe "10% for the big guy" Biden and the rest of the career politicians for that.

Were you in the position of the wealthy people you despise, you'd do the exact same thing.

They at least still PAY taxes, perhaps not as much as you'd like them to.

“Last time I ate out, a 15% tip wasn’t even offered...”

...we ate out last night and got already made salads. No waiter. The cashier had neck tattoos, nose ring etc. No “thanks for coming in” or “my pleasure”. Nothing. The bill gave me the option of 20-30% tip or nothing. I hit nothing and got a heavy breath response from the dirtball. I smiled at him.

Actually, servers are exempt from minimum wage laws in most jurisdictions.

Not really. There is a thing called the Tip Make Up. If a server is being paid less than the federal or state hourly minimum wage, whichever is higher, the employer can count the amount of tips received during the shift, divided by the hours worked to determine if the server earned at least the minimum. If not enough in tips, then the employer has to true up to the minimum wage.
