I posted because of the content / replies of yesterdays post about this event. A couple replies to that post were very informative and worth sharing.
Better to not panic and harden the grid, etc., where practical (which IS quite doable).

I’m “in the middle” — expecting serious but not catastrophic damage. Granted, my family is better set to do without electricity for a bit, than most, and we are in an area with less problematic soils.
A much bigger worry for us would be the New Madrid Fault doing a 1811-12 repeat, as we are in the vicinity, and in that case the soils are disastrous. :-(

Yea, it’s past time for a shake. I’m old enough to still remember how to live without elec and most other modern conveniences but most aren’t so it will be a wild scene if anuything catastrophic happens. Of all the man made disasters that could befall us it is God’s natural disasters that worries me the most.
I suppose there are some out there who can possibly relate this to climate change. I’d be interested in their plans to alter the sun & thereby come up with a figure of what it will mean to the taxpayers.
We got a taste of the no electricity bit in winter after the big mid-South 2009 ice storm. Luckily I was able to obtain a generator (Home Depot had a semi-load trucked in a couple days after the power went out.) We got reliable power back after, oh, I’m not sure — maybe 9-10 days or so. But we could hear neighbors just up the road running generators 3 weeks after the ice storm.
If New Madrid goes like it did last time (extended series of powerful quakes), I expect to have no power for months.

There are always schemers who will scam, and the amount will be plenty.
