Why don’t folks just do linux?

Buy a machine from a geek that will build you one without the Windows crap

Also Windows 11 is just a reskin of 10 with the added restrictions. The drivers and underlying code are mostly the same.

It should perform just as fast as 10

This (see link) is not true???

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/upgrade-to-windows-11-faq-fb6206a2-1a0f-448a-80f1-8668ee5b2bf9#:~:text=Can%20I%20upgrade%20for%20free,that%20occur%20over%20metered%20connections.

??

That said, the process you describe sounds best if one wants to do a clean / fresh install, which is often practical & desirable... (My wife has gummed up her desktop beyond me being able to otherwise fully clean it up!)

Evidently you can install win11 on older hardware with some hacks. I’ve not tried it yet.

I upgraded form Bill Gates and went to Apple. They do not update and disrupt my settings. I like WP until a virus destroyed it. 8.1 was a disaster.

>I am NOT experienced with registry changes

Make a registry backup first.

Oh, golly - I MIGHT get that accomplished over several machines and Linux “well learned” by the time I’m in elder care (10 years?*) I’m slowin’ down and have an absolute crapload to do in my remaining time, already.

If I’m “lucky”, after that my wife will haul my behind off to Philippines for my last few years - she has a small property there that even has fishing access nearby!

That article only applies if you install on a supported machine.

Microsoft allowed the clean wipe and install bypass so the computer nerds would not boycott it. They are split between wanting to enforce the new standard and wanting people to install 11

You can try the directions in this article.

I guess God blessed me with enough kids to have a geek in his 30s still. He builds it for me, and bails me out maybe once a week. Its much easier in the end than anything Microsoft dished out. I bail that son out with my electrician and handyman skills that he lacks 100%.

This is not that great of an idea.

The best thing you could do is upgrade to Linux, and get out of the big tech quagmire altogether. Especially since you said you are saving money, and on top of that this laptop is likely not supported either.

Everything is telling you to get off of big tech it seems.

There seems to be a massive disconnect.

All of us want less big tech, yet none of us take our own personal responsibility to get the heck off of what big tech is offering.

I just don’t know what it is going to take, it certainly isn’t the wokeness that gets people.

Asking for IT advice in this place is about as useful as asking for romance advice in a brothel. The majority of the answers won't contain any actionable information and what few that do leave you with the problem of winnowing the pepper from the fly specs.

I usually am loathe to recommend visiting Microsoft.com, but in this case it might be the best place to start.

Can my PC run Windows 11?

I upgraded one machine from a Windows 10 to 11, and it went very smoothly. I would say it was about a 3 relatively easy.

Get a thumb drive, and copy the files she would like to keep in the old computer your wife has, and then paste it into your C drive of your new computer.

Make sure it has at least 16g of Ram (get 32 if you can) and 1TB of hard drive.

You do not want a pre 7th generation intel core.

#13: "I've done about 10 upgrades on machines that are unsupported, using the tricks."

I agree. I've been running Windows 11 for months on an i5 3317U CPU, 12 GB RAM. NO TPM. NO TPM2. And yet my computer runs smooth as butter. I'm posting with it now. Windows 11 is very nice. The "tricks" are minimal, if they can even be called tricks at all. There really isn't much to it. Well worth doing the upgrade.

One more thing. Make sure the new machine is completely updated before installing any files from your wife’s previous machine. This might take a while.

Then I would update your wife’s machine, back it up and copy and paste files to the new machine.

Microsoft has gone full tracking along with controlling the news (MSN MSNBC) and they hand over all of that data to the government.

Best to get Ubuntu or some form of Linux. You probably won’t notice the difference after a few weeks.

All of them are tracked these days.

If you go online, then you are tracked.

The only way around it is with a VPN.
