Here are my results using the microsoft “PC Health Check” you can download for my Gigabyte Z97X-UD5H desktop pc I built in 2015. It is fast and I have had Windows 11 installed directly on it but removed it and went back to Windows 10 as the main operating system.

I have Windows 10 64-bit and I installed Windows 11 in the free Oracle VirtualBox program. The requirement below is to get you to buy a new computer at high cost vs buying a re-furbished one as I did this past Feb for $135 for a HP z240 SFF at Amazon. That one also does not meet the requirements and it is from 2018... I can run Windows 11 on it if I want with some registry changes or as described above in VirtualBox.

#14: "Right, I saw a little info. on workarounds, but am not sure if those are
needed each time one does an update? Or does that apply only to the initial
OS install?"

It only applies to the initial install. Afterward updates install without any
difference, just the same. It doesn't affect updates in any way.

My Surface Pro 5 claims it can’t be upgraded yet the control panel has a version number for 11.
It’s all I have after the fire and blast if I can figure out out what to download in case it goes sideways.

:(

Hi Salamander, good to hear from you. I don't have personal experience with the Surface Pro, but I can ask around among my coworkers and see if they have a similar situation and/or predicament. I'll let you know if I find anything useful out.

I’d sooner move to Linux than use Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or 11. Windows 7 forever.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. (Well, most everyone.)

My wife settled on wanting a 14” screen, so, I’ve acquired a Win 10 Pro Dell 5450 on the cheap ($54 including shipping), it has a 256 GB SSD (appears to be new), 8 GB RAM (1 stick), i5-5300U processor, battery looks to be good for at least 2 hours as presently configured, Belarc reports no problems, appears HD is clean except for the OS. No power adaptor / charger, but, I have a spare, plus a “Universal” adaptor.

This 5450 is quick - it might be the 2nd fastest computer we own right now, although of course that will slow down once my wife gets done loading it up... In any event, this will certainly be good enough for her trip. The layout is very similar of course to my i-7 8th gen Dell 5490 which I already like, another plus, IMO.

This should be, once wifey gets back, an excellent machine to see how an upgrade to Win 11 Pro goes. IF it goes... :-)

If one’s machine is not TPM 2.0 capable and enabled, I don’t think the “live upgrade” will work. Per Dell, some TPM 1.2 machines can be upgraded to 2.0, but, some, including machines that would seem have plenty of RAM, processor, etc., can’t.

In the latter case, the issue can be “forced” with Rufus, but, then there may well be problems with future security updates and so on. Or so I read.

This machine I got for my wife appears to be in the latter category. However, it looks like it needs a big raft of updates from both MicroSoft and Dell, so, I’ll run those and recheck the TPM issue... Assuming we (the machine and I) survive the updates!

My machine does not have a TPM, neither 1.2 nor 2.0. It has an old Ivy Bridge CPU. Just do the workarounds and you will be fine. Don’t overthink it! More important for usability is to have enough memory. 8 gb will give you good performance. Also, if you don’t have an SSD, buy an inexpensive SSD, about 256 gb. You can find great selection on Amazon for $20 or less.
