I remember reading in 2021 that zoo animals and others I’d horses and cows were going to be vaccinated because Covid can transfer from humans to animals and animals to humans.

To your point...

Longitudinal monitoring of fetlock lesions in Thoroughbred racehorses using standing 18F–sodium fluoride positron emission tomography

...Musculoskeletal injuries account for the overwhelming majority of fatalities in racehorses...

Last week they shut it down for inspection. But it’s running again.

Beyond their capabilities?

2 of these horses collapsed. That implies internal problems, heart or circulation.

2 of them “broke down” albeit it’s unclear if one actually broke down and the other fell and then was injured by it.

It’s possible for those 2 horses, something is wrong with the track. But the truth is this is no different than what has been going on for centuries. 2yos have been run for centuries, horses have been run hard every few days for centuries, and in truth not many actually suffer these fates.

This and Laurel could be a complete chance.

I was at the track when Eight Belles had to be put down. It was so awful to see. Everyone was so excited, and then.... so sad.

I have here photo hanging on my wall.

That was terrible. Just jumping up rambunctious and slipping and falling.

Same happened to the wonderful Free House as a stallion. Such a shame.

I lived in TN about 13 years. I remember the controversy re Tennessee Walkers when the general public found out that those horses walk that way because their owner put nails in the horse's hooves. It was literally painful for the horse to walk.

Dunno how all that turned out.

This would be alarming if only horses suffered injuries in sport or work or just daily activity. Race horses are generally very very well cared for.

I don’t think so.

That was the movie where the sister had been kidnapped and was being ransomed.

So, it turns out the 2 horses who just died were trained by same man.

CD and its affiliate tracks have banned him from stabling at them much less running. Including his KY Derby entry, Lord Miles.

(Also means another horse moves into the Derby slot.)

These were the horses who just “collapsed”. That can definitely be suspicious.

Sounds ridiculous.

Maybe specific handlers were accused of it.

The horses were bred that way and have been with special gaits for more than a century. As have other breeds.

Ever seen a Paso Fino and all its cousins? THAT is a curious gait. Bred that way.

OMG, that’s horrible. And this is the first race I’ve watched since Barbaro died. Watched only because I reconnected with an old high school friend just yesterday. He lives in Louisville and said I really should watch........
