“they would take us down with them. And if not, they would eventually move to the red states, and again, take them down with their voting policies”

Already happening

"A Surprising Share of Americans Wants to Break Up the Country. Here’s Why They’re Wrong."

What an ignorant headline, a perfect non-sequitur.

The headline does not purport to be a syllogism. It advances no logical argument. It merely states a "fact" ("A Surprising Share of Americans Wants to Break Up the Country." - I'll grant you that the veracity of that statement has yet to be definitively proven.), followed by an announcement that the main article will somehow "debunk" this (incorrect) "want."

It's as though I were to announce:

"A large percentage of 4-year-olds believe that the Moon is made of green cheese. Here's why those 4-year-olds are wrong!"

It isn't a "non sequitur" because it does not purport to be a complete logical argument.

We need the navy to patrol the seas in the world to keep it safe for commerce.

Actually, we don't.

The U.S. is theoretically more autonomous, more self-sustaining, than any other nation on Earth.

We choose to trade, because it boosts profitability.

But more than any other nation on Earth, the U.S. could completely sever ties, cease trading with all other countries (save Canada and Mexico - for which we don't need a Navy), and survive just fine!

We patrol the seas for the benefit of other countries (which indirectly benefits us).

...Buckley favors what he calls “home rule” for the states, a new constitutional compact giving them much more authority...

Then simply repeal the 17th amendment. Let the states take back the Senate.

The American Empire will never permit a breakup.

The Pentagon, intelligence community, oligarchs (media, tech, finance, pharma) all support the empire, which in turn supports them.

Someday this empire will collapse. On that day there won't be "freedom loving conservative areas" vs. "liberal cities." There'll be chaos and suffering throughout the land.

Something better might arise from the ashes. But that won't be until a couple of generations after the collapse.

I wish to preserve our great nation under our constitution as written. When an out of control federal government violates and rapes the constitution is whats causes civil war. I wish this not again.

You’re absolutely right that liberal enclaves within red states and conservative enclaves within blue states make a pure state-by-state break-up pointless.

To some extent, the situation is analogous to the Catholic/Lutheran divide within the Holy Roman Empire in the 16th century. Eventually, with the Peace of Augsburg they came up with a settlement “cuius regio, eius religio (”whose realm, his religion”) wherein each prince could pick either Catholicism or Lutheranism for his territory. But there was still a problem of a lot of Catholics being inside Lutheran territory and vice-versa. The solution that they came up with was a provision in the treaty that encouraged people living in “hostile” territory to relocate and basically forbidding “exit taxes” or other burdens on them moving.

“A Surprising Share of Americans Wants to Break Up the Country. Here’s Why They’re Wrong”

Here’s why the article headline is right but is wrong in the article about the reason why thef headline is right.

The “Blue State/Blue Area” phenomenon is entirely a construct of socialism funded by printed money over many decades.

When the money runs out, the Blue State ideals cannot be sustained. There will be no large-scale socialism, as we have now - and let there be no mistake, the socialism is ingrained in both Blue and Red states - it’s just more ingrained in Blue states than Red ones.

The money printing that the gargantuan Federal Beast requires cannot be sustained. We probably could wean everyone off of socialism gradually over a decade or two, but the politics don’t add up. So we are going to print and spend until one day the calliope stops.

The point is, we don’t need to break up the country, we need to amputate the worst and most expensive socialist bureaucracy from our federal and then state governments.

It will be chaos, misery, and death as our population returns kicking-and-screaming to the predominant values and expectations from government of our great-grandparents.

Present-day “blue” socialism represents a luxury that will die under its own weight. And yes, that probably means the end of the check you are getting from government, whatever it is for, whomever you are, and however much you may think you deserve it, and however much you feel it is owed to you.

We don’t need to break it up, just go back to the original Federalism system this country started out with.

BINGO! The problem, however, is that we've not been a Constitutional Republic since FDR. How do you go back to that when no one has lived under those rules? Any solution will literally take decades, with 50% or more of voters opposing it.

My idea of breaking up the country is not as messy. Texas breaks away with its well diversified economy and the other 49 stay. Red state folks who want to live in a great conservative environment are welcome to come to the nation of Texas. Others not so much...and, oh yes, first task after independence if building a wall not only to protect against Mexico but the other 49 states and one around Austin until the blue meanies there disperse and move to California

This and many of today’s arguments are proof of leftist wrong doing.

Conservatives want things to stay the same. Liberals want change. Not an insult, it’s a fact.

So if things were going just fine until suddenly they aren’t, the leftists have admitted blame.

“40 percent of Joe Biden voters agreed to some extent with the proposition that the country should split up”

It only goes to show the folly of “progressivism”. These people are not forward-thinking and they don’t have a special perspective on what is best for the survivability and well-being of the United States. What they have are major psychological “issues”, but now they call it “thinking outside the box” when it’s really something much less benign.

“…although it’s not obvious that the poisonous contention of our era is worse than that of, say, the 1790s or the 1970s —“

Stopped reading right there. Manifestly the left have gone completely insane. As such these days don’t compare even remotely to the political contention of any other era. The growing desire to split is an attempt to preclude war. Things were extremely hotly debated using often the most savage and offensive terms in the past but…was anyone back then CRAZY? ? INSANE? WOKE?

Pretty much but it also sounds like all out war to me.
