New Mexico here, where you can be killed by a Studebaker with original paint. I was nearly hit by a car with three temporary spares on it. Lots of crazy vehicles here, although the only time I was ever hit was by a lady in a Lexus.

“Dang, that sucks. Sorry to hear this. Wasn’t aware of it. That has to go too.”

Sucks, but it’s a federal agreement - we’re stuck with it.

“doesn’t follow... more accidents means higher rates”

Do you think more saturated fat always means more clogged arteries?

Perhaps a local jurisdiction in Texas has a law about driving with a broken headlight or taillight. You have so many days to fix it or get a fine.

Texas was only one of 13 states with inspections? I didn't know that. I used to live in Texas, Virginia, New York where the cars were inspected, didn't give it much thought as my cars were well maintained and always passed. Only an idiot would like to skip this to avoid before forced to fix something that they should get fixed.

Okay, here in Nevada as I think about it, the annual check for older cars is simply emissions. And as I think about it, that's likely why we have so many truly junk and unsafe cars on the roads--I regularly see bald, even cord showing on tires, broken up windshields, missing lights, etc.

Alabama used 5o be like that.

There are no cities like Dallas,San Antonio, or Houston in either Alabama or New Mexico.

You don’t live here, and you have no clue. I live here. Inspections are a joke. I see POS stuff on the road all the time with or without a registration sticker. This state is overrun with illegals and aholes that don’t carry insurance. Inspections don’t do chit to reduce that. You go ahead and love your gubmint that is “protecting” you. Inspection fees are nothing but another worthless tax and a payoff to lobbyist that own garages and other inspection stations.

?

Do you even know what CA does?

Besides smog tests, CA Doesn’t give a rats ass, unless the car is registering as a salvaged. then you need a basic Brake and lamp.

Exception is now all commercial vehicles utilizing diesel power trains that weigh over 15k. They’re doing more in depth tests.... on emissions....

Not since 1986. Beginning in 1980 in the Navy, I had cars registered in California, in those young days I just did what was need to get them licensed.

Last moved from Texas in 2004. Again, I had new or newer vehicles so the details of inspection were no big deal, the cost minimal, just something to be done.

On Peaks island in Portland harbor Maine island cars require brakes and headlights. That’s it.

No, tires, lights, wipers, brakes, and emissions. Even Motorcycles have to get inspected. It’s a racket. Most states don’t have this BS.

Same here in Florida. Florida used to have car inspections but did away with that around 1980. I have had old near-beater cars in my youth because that was all I could afford at the time. But I kept them in safe condition - good brakes and tires and all headlights working. I see cars that are literally junk. Cars that have been in accidents and are sort of twisted (you have to see it to believe it) but still on the road. Plenty of cars with one headlight working and no running lights or tail lights. And it’s not all junker cars. I really love it when I see an expensive SUV with a lot of bling but the owner can’t be bothered to replace a burned-out headlight. Some idiot could crash into me because he is too cheap to have the brakes fixed. I’m sure the illegal aliens in Texas will drive nice, well-maintained, safe cars.

Fifteen states have a periodic (annual or biennial) safety inspection program,
while Maryland requires a safety inspection and Alabama requires a VIN
inspection on sale or transfer of vehicles which were previously registered
in another state. An additional 16 states require periodic emissions inspections.
