“I wonder if we will ever know how deep the Titan was when it imploded.”
Timewise iirc the point at which contact was lost would have had them just about on the bottom.
It was supposed to take two hours to reach the Titanic. Last heard from was at one hour forty five. Assuming uniform descent, that would put them at least 9,000 ft down. Plenty pressure there.
As I understand it testing of the airframes has told them how many cycles they have in them. THAT with a little buffer added is the service life of the plane.
In supercritical coal-fired power plants, a pinhole steam leak from the steam pipes at 3,200 psi will cut off your arm (or worse). Power plant guys tell tales of plant personnel walking around with broom sticks searching for the leak. I never did find out if that is an old wives tale or true.
With a brittle carbon fiber shell, there’s no chance they could detect leak. The whole shell disintegrated in a split second, probably before the nervous system and brain could detect anything was wrong. Think of you standing on a runway and a 747 landing on you. Or you stepping on an ant.
“Don’t touch that . . . “ BOOM!
“Oh s...!”
They should be able to estimate the depth the submersible reached from the time the dive started to the time contact was lost.
> The amount of energy contained in one kilogram of TNT is given (on the internet) as 4.6 mJ per kg. <
That’s very wrong. I’ll be gracious, and assume that the author simply made a typo there. I believe that he meant megajoules per kilogram (MJ/kg) and not millijoules per kilogram (4.6 mJ/kg).
Big difference.
I love Scott Manley! Thank you for this. The man is brilliant.
Cooked or liqified, or both.
Precisely.. idiots are idiots and paying $250k each to be and idiot I’m ok with.
I just wish we could get all the liberal lemmings to follow suit.. you know like the government paying off you’re one way ticket to see the titanic.
Join the wreckage of the Titanic! Book your one-way trip!
Cannot vouch for the accuracy of this article, but if the vessel imploded 1600 ft. from the Titanic, thent it would have been about 10,900 feet below the surface. I would be interested in seeing the energy math using that number as a basis.
I believe the debris field was 1600 ft from the Titanic. Size and content of the debris field would likely be a strong indicator of depth.
Your comment made me laugh hysterically. I need help. Lol!
Crocodile close at 3,700 PSI
Well, that’s interesting.
Maybe they’re all hanging out in DuBuque, IA with Jim Morrison right now even.
Two things:
First thing: We don’t know for 100% the carbon fiber portion failed first. It could have been an end cap or a window. If I had to bet my life it would be on the carbon fiber failing, but it’s not absolutely certain at this moment.
Second thing: Where the sub wreckage was found was, according to what I’ve heard, right where the sub was headed. So why did it take several days for that area to be scanned? Why didn’t they START where the sub was supposed to be?
