My daughter has a lab in a major University on the left coast. This year a colleague of hers had a summer intern from an HBCU down south. He is about to graduate and struggles with even simple math. After a summer in the lab he STILL cannot be trusted to calculate dilutions to make solutions for experiments. He still does not know how to use basic equipment for pipetting liquids without help. He is working in an animal lab and his attention span is so bad that animals have escaped cages. My daughter had to help him with a presentation he had to give and after correcting him over and over he still makes the same mistakes. Now he is asking for recommendations to get into graduate school for engineering. Affirmative action in action.

I guess that explains why they have redone the SATs over the years. To correct a downward trend in results they changed the tests. Similar, some jurisdictions have changed how laws are catalogued to promote a better image by recasting some violations that were felonies and making them misdemeanors. (One state had so many cars stolen they made simple car theft a misdemeanor. It was not Cal btw.

Math is one of God’s languages. Another reason why leftists hate it.

“At many universities, engineering and biology majors are struggling to grasp fractions and exponents”

I’m sure the pandemic & online classes caused delayed learning effecting college entrance exams, but fractions & exponents are taught way before college, in fact, fractions are before high school. The article is attempting to blame the pandemic for poor education in schools in general. Sounds like an agenda to me.

My daughter-in-law took calculus in the ninth grade. She is Chinese.

Now, compare to US schools where math is subjected to the vagaries of WOKE.

Yep, you are correct, this story is complete BS. There is no way to even do calculus without algebra. Nearly every problem in the end comes down to algebra in calculus.

Common Core indoctrination has destroyed math education.

“ I mean, we use Algebra everyday.”

Yes we do. College educated people he’s talking about. Algebra is applied logic. You don’t use the equations every day but in learning algebra logic pathways in the brain are created

Grammar uses algebra. Sentences are equations. People in certain jobs have to be able to use basic logic, grammar, communication skills. They cannot. My boss, tge peoplke o work with. They are illogical, they can’t spell they can’t figure out basic fairness in dividing up workload. They don’t know that when you overwork people they quit creating a ridiculous turnover of professionals

Anyway it’s not the pandemic.

Parents are absolutely responsible for their children’s education. If everyone gets to be stupid our country will fail. And look what we have.

Not knowing algebra eliminates nearly every STEM profession.

The “honors” programs in some inner city schools would be barely remedial fifty years ago.

Obviously, the reporter didn’t “ace” physics or he/she/ze wouldn’t have written that.

He/she/ze is probably just another airhead graduate of a liberal major. Talking with one of these people is like chasing a roach around a kitchen table.

“heteroskedasticity”

Great word ... I don’t think I have ever seen anyone use that in a sentence where it really seemed to belonged.

gold star on your chart for today.

Stop blaming the “pandemic”. The pandemic didn’t make them stupid, the deliberate lockdowns imposed by ego-driven politicians, unelected bureaucrats and lying “medical experts” that have made them stupid.

“My boss, tge peoplke o work with. “

Cracked me up .... I think you did that on purpose .. a little irony .
Sweet..
Some times I stick a little "double entendre" or ironic clause or some such in a post. Generally goes unnoticed ... but sometimes .. someone picks up on it.

After my father started getting some serious brain fogginess from old age, I used math to help clear up his thinking (I was his caregiver). It was like physical exercise in that he complained every day and every step of the way...but it worked. After a while, he even started to enjoy it. And his thinking and memory got noticeably sharper.

Yes! Music works too. I know an elderly lady who was worried about oncoming Alzheimer's. Although she had never learned to read music or play an instrument she decided to learn how to play piano. She's very good at it and mentally fit again. Learning is good therapy!
