naming things in the night sky, which belongs to everyone

An awful lot of the stars have arabic name origins. Lots of slavery associated there. Greek and Roman mythical stuff as well for much of named astronomical bodies. Still more slavery associations from ancient times. I have no connection to these things so change every named item pretty much in the sky. Of course only if one is being consistent which of course the left never is.

Magellan’s voyage helped pave the way for Spanish colonialism in South America, Guam and the Philippines, says de los Reyes, who is Filipino American. “Many people see Magellan as a villain in the Philippines.”

In my best Archie Bunker voice Would it make you feel better, little girl, if they was enslaved and killed by Chinese explorers instead?

How about “No”.

These types are never satisfied; they’ll just continue to move the goalposts.

Give em an arcsecond and they’ll take a parsec.

The astronomers are now trying out new names. One popular suggestion is to call them the “Milky Clouds.” That would maintain the commonly used acronyms, LMC and SMC. And it would reflect the galaxies’ connection to something much bigger than any one person — the Milky Way.

This is what happens when they force science students to take some "social" courses in order to graduate. Their brains aren't geared for pure BS, and they start accepting it as fact, like they're used to in their own fields.

First of all, Magellin was killed by a Filipino warlord, Lapulapu. Magellin cut deals with local rulers, but the islands weren’t colonized by him. His successor, Legazpi started that process forty years later.

Next, before the Spanish ever conceived of the Philippines, the islands were conquered by Hindu, then Muslim invaders. Then, the Chinese exercised significant hegemony over the Philippines, both diplomatically and via forced migration, using it as a barrier from and negotiating point with the Spanish.

History just isn’t so neat and clean as all the modern haters would have it.
