I thought so, they did the “Da Bears” skits.
When Chris Foley was still alive, and every skit he’d have a heart attack and beat on his own chest to get it going again.
I can only vaguely remember him as a player in his final season. The debate in the barbershop was between Butkus and Nobis for best middle LB in the NFL. I don’t think that anyone seriously thought that Nobis (a great player in his own right) was better. RIP.
Blue Thunder the series.
Bears are playing tonight. They may well be inspired by the memory of this NFL legend.
The greatest middle linebacker that ever played the game.
This is the way I want to go - a sudden medical emergency, but of natural causes. Better yet, my dad did it the classic way- died in his sleep. My guess is it was sleep apnea because he was a snorer and that was before he and I knew of of the benefits of CPAP. I’m a believer in CPAP. This new machine I just received tells me how many ‘events’ I have through the night. I wouldn’t be without it.
My first knowledge of Mr. Butkus came watching him and Illinois beat my Washington Huskies in the 1964 Rose Bowl. One of the greatest, RIP.
My wife and I lightly bumped into him and his wife on a dance floor at a gala in Chicago. Said “sorry” and got a nice smile. I actually met the man.
In Green Bay, we always favored Ray Nitchke. He lost the will to live when his wife passed. Packers and Bears forever.
“ Bears are playing tonight.”
He didn’t want to watch them lose again.
L
That would be another great debate. Nitchke was awesome. Another great one that was a little before my time.
I’m just glad I got to see them both.
Caught the last part of his playing career, intimidating as hell on the field. Only other guy of that generation to compare him to was Jack Lambert. Different style of play between the two but both monsters of the backfield.
Lambert also.
You know, he did prowl like Lambert. Same exact posture. I was a huge Jack Ham fan.
Lambert was an unbelievable LB. I think he was better against the pass than most of the other greats. It helped to be on that defense. Wow. Stars at nearly every position. I don’t know how anyone game planned against them. Where was the weakness?
Yes the Greatest Middle Linebacker.
He redefined the Middle Linebacker position.
Later in his career with the bad knees his range was out about 15 yards from line of scrimmage. But in the area and into the backfield he was DEADLY.
RIP Mr. Butkus
