One of the best games ever was Miami giving the Bears their only blemish in 1985.
The NCAA loaded up Florida with probation or they would have slaughtered everybody. Marshall, Neil Anderson, on and on...a monster team. Both went to the Bears.
It is sad to see that generation of players leave us. Butkus was great as a Packer fan I hated to see him on the field against us. I am sure I am jaded and have not watched an NFL game in years. But the players back in their time were a different breed. Without all the rules and gear to protected them they stilled showed up every Sunday to play until their bodies just gave out. Merlin Olson died young at 69, Nitschke died young at 61 and Nobis at 74.
It’s gonna take something special to inspire that team!
I remember how dominant Marshall was against USC in 1982, that was really the start of Florida’s ascendency in football.
Read toward the top. I mentioned Nitchke.
His Quick Cook Grill using wads of newspaper as the heating source were great. Early 90’s I think.
The NCAA treatment of Florida was criminal. Took them off TV and took their scholarships for a couple of years. Kerwin Bell got hurt and lost a great career because of it. Ask the NCAA what they did and you got gibberish as a reply. But there were other schools doing some real nastiness and they were allowed to win championships.
“His Quick Cook Grill using wads of newspaper as the heating source were great.”
Forgot that one.
No. Chuck Hughes of the Detroit Lions collapsed on the field and Dick Butkus was one of the first to realize he was in a medical emergency. He waved his arms frantically calling for the medical staff for assistance. Some people who saw that Butkus was next to him as he lay on the field assumed that Butkus must have hit him and upon hearing he had died, some fans falsely accused Butkus of killing Hughes. But there was no contact between them on that play.
That was Chuck Bednarik who layed out Frank Gifford and almost killed him. Frank missed a season and then came back and made the Pro Bowl as a WR.
Loved watching Dicta and Buddy Ryan cursing each other out on the sidelines at that game!🤣
A postmortem examination revealed that Hughes was suffering from undiagnosed and advanced arteriosclerosis (one of his coronary arteries was 75% blocked) and that he had a family history of heart disease. The direct cause of death was a coronary thrombosis, which caused a massive myocardial infarction that cut off the blood flow to his heart.
His widow filed a $21.5 million malpractice lawsuit against Henry Ford Hospital in 1972 for not diagnosing his condition after the Bills game. The lawsuit was settled on October 3, 1974, for an undisclosed amount of money.
At least Buddy didn’t punch Ditka.
Bednarik was one mean dude. He held Paul Hornung down until the gun went off in the 1960 title game. Told him, “You can get up now.” Didn’t he stand over Gifford like a wrestler?
I see what you did there.
Cough (Miami) cough.🥴😁

"We were agonizing over a missed pass, from Detroit quarterback Greg Landry to one of the game’s best tight ends, Charlie Sanders. A pass slithered through Sanders’ hands near the goal line. If Sanders catches it, it’s likely touchdown Detroit and the Lions’ fifth victory in six games."
Pretty sure I was lifting a head hanged in disappointment when I saw Butkus, in his white Bears No. 51 jersey, jumping and waving. His back was to us, and Hughes, No. 85 in Honolulu blue, was face down near the Chicago 20.
We heard fans around us ask: “Did Butkus hit him?” Someone said, no, that Hughes had just collapsed. His widow, players from both teams and some fans say Hughes had just run a pass route and was returning to huddle for the next play when he hit the turf.
Medical personnel raced to the prone Hughes. The player was nearest our end of the field, but it was difficult to see exactly what trainers and two team doctors were doing. Later we learned a doctor also was summoned from the stands. CPR was performed, and the medical crew had cut away Hughes’ jersey and shoulder pads. In no more than 10 or 15 minutes, an ambulance drove onto the field and took Hughes to Henry Ford Hospital. At 5:34 p.m., Hughes, 28, in his fifth NFL season, was pronounced dead. Cause of death: heart attack."
Yeppers.
I remember a billboard posted in Houston in 1970 advertising the arrival of Dick Butkus playing for the Bears against the Oilers in a preseason game. My dad got tickets and we went to the game. He was impressive.
