“Sell it for MORE than I paid for it.”

Had a work friend that did that. Seems like he always had a new Jeep Wrangler. Now I understand why. :)

I have to laugh, decades ago the Audi was ridiculed for being the quintessential “lose half it’s value when leaving the lot car.

Still a POS it appears.

BNW does not surprise, see newer one being flat-bedded to the local dealer all the time.

I build classics for a living. I only build vehicles that are before 1973. Every thing I sell goes for almost twice what it was bought for new.

Right.

But which one bleeds you dry the most in maintenance and upkeep?

I’m a car guy, and I had one as a rental down in Tampa, and I was shocked at how bad it was. The CVT transmission made passing “interesting”. The best way I can describe it is it’s like bad turbo lag. You press the gas, and it eventually gets around to giving you the power to pass.

Also, it was uncomfortable, and felt cheap. A trend I saw in the 4Runner I got in Idaho, and the Camry I got in Phoenix. Great cars, most likely will run forever, but what happened to the interiors?

One of my buds bought a top of the line 911 Turbo S last year, and has driven it for a year. The dealership has contacted him and is offering to buy it back for $10K more than he paid for it.

Evidently the days of stupid money are still happening for some models.

I’ve had 2 Ford Rangers.

1997 Ranger. Reg. Cab. 4 cyl. Automatic.

1999 Mazda B4000. Ext. Cab. Auto.

I loved them both. The B4000 probably more since it was nicer.

Best: Race cars.

Worst: anything else.

“I know an owner of a Ford dealership who says that the deal with UAW is insane and will skyrocket the price of union made automobiles.”

That kind of analysis is right in a car dealer’s wheelhouse so there’s a good chance the opinion is worth something.

I’d buy a Prius if I could sleep in it. Doable? Slide the passenger seat forward?

I worked at a Porshe, BMW, Audi shop 40 years ago.
We said, back then, that BMW meant Bum-Wobbly.

My 2013 Honda CRV is going strong and since I’m retired it’s not getting driven as much. I just replaced the battery in the key fob for the first time - it, the car and me, all good for another ten years!

Who used to put out that annual book with reliability ratings on all the used cars? We used to look up the BMWs to laugh because they had 5 or 6 black circles, the worst rating possible for reliability and repair costs. That was decades ago.

Ya. I guess I am a practical consumer. Reliability and quality have always been my priority. Status symbol not so much.

2016 Tacoma owner here. I’ll probably drive this until it’s dead or I am. I love it.

That sounds like an excellent value to me. If I had another garage stall I’d have a classic.

I have a 1967 Camaro I bought in 1978 for $250 out of a junk yard. What is its resale value now (with new engine and tranny)?

“That sounds like an excellent value to me. If I had another garage stall I’d have a classic.”

It is fun. and here is the deal. Classics were built to be dependable and last sometimes three generations. If one was to dump 20k into a classic they would have a real car made out of real metal that will last the rest of their lives.

A 1966 is ten times the vehicle they make now. And it is EMP proof. Only one problem, most had manual crank up windows. Now days most are so lazy this would be a deal breaker... lol

No, you are correct.

The life cycle goes from someone happy to part with lots of money, then realizing they have a car that is extremely difficult to get fixed and needs intensive maintenance, finding the dealership network is very limited, then selling at a loss.

Then someone snaps up a cool European car at bargain rates, then realizes the same thing as did the first owner.

Finally some young guy buys the car for a song thinking he’ll fix it up and have a cool ride. He sets it under a tarp until he can earn the gobs of money needed to get it running right.

Then it either sits and rusts or goes to the scrapyard.

The ONLY European vehicle maker that has a good dealer network doesn’t sell cars. They make motorcycles and their name is KTM.
