The Vatican talks about the cardinals being guided by the Holy Spirit. But although open campaigning is forbidden, a papal election is still a highly political process by 120 human beings. In my youth I used to wonder if each one of them has talked with a Divine Being personally. No, it's just a matter of politics, personal preferences, friendships, and coalitions.
Being less naive, I can now state why I don't believe in Catholicism. 120 guys vote for their favorite and 2/3rds say who is the new connection to God. My apologies to Catholics, but I have learned why Protestants and other denominations came along.
Personally, I don't believe any organized religion has it correct. I don't even believe in the Bible. Why? The first testament are made up out of nowhere. The 2nd testament is written by men who believed the Earth was flat, the Sun revolved around the Earth, every devastating weather event or locusts feeding, a world-wide flood was the anger of God. That said, there is enough evidence that Jesus Christ existed and I believe in his philosophy of goodness. I live my life by those virtues, such as honesty/caring/compassion/consideration/excellence/friendliness/generosity/kindness/forgiveness/love/loyalty/and most important integrity. I apply those virtues to everyone until they prove they don't deserve them. However, the resurrection and being the direct Son of the Creator of the universe is questionable to my logic. I have so many other questions for the accepted God of all the religions.
I don't mean to offend anyone, I'm just using the logic and reasoning that such a Divine Spirit gave me and so little of it makes sense.
My take on the Universe: One or more entities that we will never understand threw out a device with certain physics laws and bang. Still, in the depths of my heart, I hope there is one or more FORGIVING gods who can see what I'm about and accept me into their LIGHT. If not, I won't know because I won't be conscience, as before the sperm hit the egg. Again, sorry if that offends any sensibilities.
