I doubt today’s audience would have the patience and attention span needed for BL. As you say it is actually a work of art.

Some of Paper Moon was shot out here in the flatlands of Kansas. Tiny towns they went thru on their adventure. There are tiny memorials of the movie all the way across the state where they filmed. Even today a major motion picture being filmed local would make a huge disruption, just like it did in the 70’s. “Hey, it was a big deal!”

I am a huge Kubrick fan. But I was always reluctant to watch Barry Lyndon. (Contrary to what you might think, it is not about the 1964 presidential race.)

Anyway, I did watch it, and it is, in my opinion, Kubrick's best film. O'Neal, again in my opinion, is not a great actor, but Kubrick was able to utilize his pretty-boy blank stares to tremendous effect. No one makes movies like that anymore. I mean, no super hero alter-egos. Who would go see it?

As I said in another reply I don’t know if today’s audience has the patience and attention span Barry Lyndon requires and deserves. Like a fine symphony it takes adult commitment.
