A few bumps and scratches along the way, but I’m still here! It’s been an amazing journey.

I’ll never forget on the news, they showed a parent who just found out their child was on board the flight, her reaction will always stay with me.

We’re remembering the same strike (Operation El Dorado Canyon) with the F-111s. But it was retaliation for the bombing of a Berlin discoteque in 1986. Not the Lockerbie bombing two years later. From Wikipedia:

“The United States Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps carried out air strikes, code-named Operation El Dorado Canyon, against Libya on 15 April 1986 in retaliation for the West Berlin discotheque bombing ten days earlier, which U.S. President Ronald Reagan blamed on Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. There were 40 reported Libyan casualties; one U.S. plane was shot down. One of the claimed Libyan deaths was of a baby girl, reported to be Gaddafi’s daughter, Hana Gaddafi.[5] However, there are doubts as to whether she was really killed, or whether she truly existed.[6]”

This one I had a better memory of. From Wikipedia’s page about the PanAm 103/Lockerbie bombing:

” In 2001, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence officer, was jailed for life after being found guilty of 270 counts of murder in connection with the bombing. In August 2009, he was released by the Scottish government on compassionate grounds after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He died in May 2012 as the only person to be convicted for the attack.”

They should have kept him in prison, as the sentence dictated.

By golly - that’s right. Like I said - hard to remember after so much time has passed. We may not get specifics correct but we can remember that RR wasn’t afraid to take action when it was called for.

I’m glad you cleared that up....thanks.

“”A few bumps and scratches along the way, but I’m still here! It’s been an amazing journey.””

I don’t know if I’m glad I’m nearer to the end than the beginning or the middle..Would we do things differently? Probably not!

I was working in Detroit that Christmas, and a lot of folks from the area were on the flight.

And wasn’t one of the bombers returned to Libya as a humanitarian because he was supposedly at death’s door?
= = =

In my perverted scheme of things. he would have been infected with AIDS or some other (fill in the blanks)_____ thing.

Then released.

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi (a Libyan who was head of security for Libyan Arab Airlines, director of the Centre for Strategic Studies in Tripoli, Libya, and an alleged Libyan intelligence officer) was convicted on 31 January 2001 by a special Scottish Court in the Netherlands for the bomb attack on Pan Am Flight 103 on 21 December 1988 over Lockerbie. After he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer, he was released from prison on compassionate grounds on 20 August 2009, having served 8½ years of a life sentence. His release was authorised by Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill. The decision attracted significant news coverage, engendering widespread celebration in Libya, a largely hostile reaction in the United States and a more equally divided reaction in Britain.[1]

His prolonged survival, exceeding the approximate three months suggested in August 2009, generated much controversy.[2] In Libya, he was released from hospital and later lived at his family’s villa. His death was announced on 20 May 2012.[3][4]

I remember it well.

I was in Malta that morning, and flew to Geneva on The Air Malta flight that was determined in subsequent investigations to allegedly have had the bomb in the luggage in the hold - I transferred to a transatlantic flight and hopped on American Airlines in Geneva to go to Dallas. The bomb went on continuation of the Air Malta flight to Frankfurt, then loaded on a Pan Am flight to London, then the bomb luggage was transferred to the Pan Am 747 that departed for New York but did not go past Locherbie before exploding.

There went one of my 9 lives.

This is a true story. So yeah, I remember.

I never knew that part...

Sixteen days before the explosion over Lockerbie, the U.S. embassy in Helsinki, Finland, received a call warning that a bomb would be placed on a Pan Am flight out of Frankfurt.

Thanks....Wonder what happened to this:

“”In December 2022, the U.S. Justice Department announced Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud was arrested by the FBI for his suspected role in the bombing.””

Guess I’ll have to do some snooping. Knowing how our Justice Department has operated of late, probably nothing came of it.
