Every Christmas morning the first thought in my head is, “Happy birthday, Lord.” Followed up by “Let me know if there’s anything I can do for you today.” But I say that to a lot of people.
My church decorates for Christmas, with a manger outside and the columns at the rectory wrapped in red ribbons, like colossal candy canes. But kids like that stuff and the parish contains a lot of kids. If they get a charge out of it, why would I object?
Or if Christmas brings out the kid in grownups, what’s wrong with that?
Let’s not overthink it. Commercialized Thanksgiving and Christmas don’t turn believers into unbelievers, and might even do the reverse, now and then.
And churning up all that money means somebody’s got a job, a bonus, a paid day off, maybe something in a stocking to pay the phone bill, or just a free hot meal.
We might do well to have a religious holiday every month, even if it gets tacky sometimes.
