Two shots, one to each eyeball. Easy peasy. :-)
You shoot a bear at 50 yards and Game and Fish will prosecute you.
World record grizzly bear taken by 22. Skill is the biggest factor.
Another difference is that discharging a firearm that misses may slow down or even stop an attack due to noise and flash. A miss with bear spray is not particularly discouraging to the bear.
Thanks for posting these. This series of articles is great. Informative and useful for those of us who spend time in the woods where bears live.
That was an act of God.
Getting a bear spray canister out of a holster is not easy, not one-handed, and not fast.
Weren’t you hungry after hiking ten more miles from your meal area? Wouldn’t one mile have done the job?

It would seem speed helps in close encounters
I’ve only seen browns in glacier remote and Alberta forests above Hinton on the eastern slope
Both were several 100 Yards
But looking at me
I had long gun 30-06 in Canada I brought in
I think they are a challenge
I’ve got a ruger #1 .340 weatherby mag
Great caliber but only one shot
I prefer to avoid grizzly
Euro brownies while large seem more chill
Or Russians are crazy AH
In a world which is NOT described as ‘bizzarro’, such logic might be applied to US criminal justice (including traitorous politicians/bureaucrats).
But we are, truly, living in Bizzarro world.
“We are up to our ears in bears here in FLORIDA!!!!!”
I’m in orange-grove territory, and the state is expanding its “BEAR” road warning-sign-program to include ME!
New Hampshire has a hunting season on bears, but EVERYBODY has a “meeting-up” story.
If you wait until your head is in their mouth, yes.
If they are some distance off, no.
It should be a requirement that anyone advocating for bear spray only, be required to spend a few months in heavily populated bear country with nothing but bear spray
I’m betting there wouldn’t be any articles about bear spray only.

Yup! Lots of smart folks here with vast experience In different issues- never too old to learn something new, and if someone has memory issues like me, I can learn the same “something new” over and over again as though hearing it forthefirsttime. 😆
I was going down river in a very comfortable 23’ Duckworth jet boat (90 % of downriver guys r in canoes).
10 miles under power (as opposed to most of the time just floating along in the 7 knot current) took about 30 mins.
This year I attempted to go down river in a 37’ pontoon boat I built. In the course of launching into the river in Dawson City, we had a launching accident that caused a lot of damage. Cancelled this years effort.
Ouch! Terrible. All that planning and effort.
I take it you were planning on traveling with someone.
Yes, this year, my 4th year going down river, I had a crew person for the first year. With the bigger boat, I had no choice.
Alas, it was a 9,500 mile “scenic” drive ONLY.
They just want climate change action, NOW!
