A “fossilized” something of some organic origen when Mars briefly had organic life - before its tiny gravity and low magnetic field helped loose sufficient atmosphere to protect the surface for life.

“Mysterious” is just a lazy way for the article author to draw people in. Natural processes leave lots of polygonal shapes.

Which is it? Meters or Kilometers?
"The newly discovered features, however, were detected more than 35 kilometers beneath the planetβs surface."
"As a result, 16 mysterious polygons were spotted below a depth of 35 meters, meaning they were likely formed billions of years in the planetβs past."
I suspect it is only meters, as the limits of ground penetrating radar carried on-board the rover, likely can't achieve the 35 kilometer depth.
