That movie never gets old. I crack up laughing every time I see it.

Funny story: My parents went to see it when it first came out in the theater. My mom was a classy southern lady who was proper in public but had a sharp wit and an appreciation for more base humor as well.

During the campfire scene, my dad was mortified as his sweet southern wife laughed harder and longer than anyone else in the packed theater.

I’m kind of proud of that. 😄

Found this reference re. the Dr. Gillespie killings at https://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_board/11/messages/717.html.

Boris the hangman is about to hang a dignified-looking older gentleman in a wheelchair and Hedley Lamarr says: "Yes, the Dr. Gillespie killings."

The dignified-looking older gent is supposed to be Lionel Barrymore who played Dr. Gillespie in a series of films in the early to mid forties.

Mr. Barrymore was stricken with a very serious condition of arthritis which had him confined to a wheelchair. He was only supposed to live a year or so but that year lasted long enough to become several years' worth of books and movies that went on and on and on.

He continued acting in his wheelchair playing crotchety Dr. Gillespie, mentor of Dr. Kildare as played by Lew Ayres.

The films are:
Dr. Gillespie's New Assistant
Calling Dr. Gillespie
Dr. Gillespie's Criminal Case

So "The Dr. Gillespie Killings" is Mel Brooks' twisted take on what he considers should have been the last Dr. Gillepsie film.

He was. He was to be the star instead of Little. But his drug arrests and the possibility that being high most of the time would interfere.

Too bad.

Clevon Little was perfect in that role. It helped that he was a classically-trained actor.

Here’s another fun fact that I did not know. Who was it that turned down the role of the Waco Kid?

John Wayne.

Wayne also turned down the role of the Waco Kid in Blazing Saddles because it went against the rest of his filmography.

So, theaters are going to do a wide release anniversary showing to celebrate?

Yeah. Right after a re-release of Song of the South.

I remember You Can't Take it With You. Great movie.  Google tells me this.....

Why was Lionel Barrymore on crutches in you can t take it with you?

Shortly before filming began, Lionel Barrymore lost the use of his legs to crippling arthritis and a hip injury. To accommodate him, the script was altered so that his character had a sprained ankle, and Barrymore did the film on crutches.

“William J LePetomane Memorial Thruway? What will that a$%#*le think of next? Now someone’s gotta go get a $h**load of dimes!”

and the classic:

“Can we have more beans boss?”

I was 9 when my parents came back from seeing that at the Eielson AFB theater. They kept us kids awake because they were laughing so hard.

Now we have President LePetomane in the White House.

Hedley Lamarr:
Meeting adjourned. Oh, I am sorry sir I didn’t mean to overstep my bounds, you say that.

Governor William J. Le Petomane:
What?

Hedley Lamarr:
Meeting is adjourned.

Governor William J. Le Petomane:
It is?

Hedley Lamarr:
No, you say that governor.

Governor William J. Le Petomane:
What?

Hedley Lamarr:
Meeting is adjourned.

Governor William J. Le Petomane:
It is?

Hedley Lamarr:
Here sir, play with this.

“We’ll take the N****** and the Ch***....BUT WE DON’T WANT THE IRISH!!!”

When quoting a 50 year old classic, it is permissible to use the quote which was {“We’ll take the Niggers and the Chinks....BUT WE DON’T WANT THE IRISH!!!”}

It was funny then and it still is, but political correctness has distorted humor.

If anyone should be pissed, it is the Irish, but they're too drunk to know...Oh, now I've done it.

Didn’t care for YF at all.

I consider Young Frankenstein to be Mel Brooks' cinematic masterpiece and one of the funniest films ever made.

What movies do you think are funny?
