There are piles of Youtube videos analyzing Girl From Ipanema — showing how to play it, explaining the chord structure. But no one can create a Girl From Ipanema nowadays. Mindboggling recording equipment available to anyone yet no one can make a compelling song. Same way with film and probably across all the arts. Amazing tools that surpass anything that was available to previous generations yet we’re stuck in the doldrums. These are the strangest times. I was watching an interview of Joe Pass the other day. He didn’t even have a record player as a kid when he was learning guitar.
I think Bossa Nova diehards would bristle at the suggestion that it’s really just jazz with a Brazilian accent.
