Based on the trailer, I thought Civil War would be a hard pass. Chris Gore speculated that the target might be the media culture. That could be interesting if it's done well. I'm willing to withhold judgment and glance at a few reviews once it's released.

I see that Alex Garland's wife is English-Mexican, so it's perhaps not surprising that she gravitated to a Mexican subject. I have no idea about her politics, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's a leftie.

I've only seen a couple of Garland's movies. He leans towards sci fi. I highly recommend Never Let Me Go.

Do you ever watch the Film Threat guys? The YouTube algorithm is doing what the algorithms do, which is feeding me more and more of what I watched last time, so I am now getting a steady stream of the "Die, Woke Hollywood, Die" stuff. I don't watch most of it, but I dive into a few pieces if a title catches my eye. Over time I've found a few commentators who seem to me to be on target. Film Threat is in this group. They're too pop culture oriented for me to invest too much time, but they are solid on DEI, Woke Hollywood, last year's strikes, Disney, etc.

Like many of the others, they publish in multiple formats. I have no use for the very long roundtable discussions -- maybe there's a drive time audience for that, but it's not for me -- but they will then excerpt and edit shorter pieces which are often quite good. This one is recent, within the last day or two. Pick it up around 4:10 if you don't want to watch the whole thing.

The headline is misleading. This short piece is focused on the "DEI Putting Creatives Out of Work" part of what was presumably a longer piece. Note that none of the people in the linked video are the executives who caused the problem; they are the worker bees who don't get golden parachutes and are stuck paying the price. Stick with it long enough to hear Ng's summary judgment: what do the people in the linked video have in common, besides being out of work; and -- while he sympathizes with people losing their jobs, their homes and their careers because they are the targets of a racist purge -- most of them probably voted for Obama, so they brought it on themselves. I note this simply as a hint to the political orientation in play if you aren't familiar with these guys.

Film Threat comments on DEI fallout

An Empire has money coming in. We had money going out.

That is not an empire. That is someone who is being mooched off of.

Reality.

Doesn't care what Karl Rove thinks.

Criticism of the excessive costs of the British Empire, and lack of benefits, goes back to the 19th Century.

Every Empire: the people pay for an Empire that benefits the Empirial Elite

Thanks for the Film Threat reference.

I do watch some videos on film. There are a number of pretty good ones around.

It seems like there is a lot of technical talent available for people who are trying to make films outside of the Hollywood establishment.

Yes but they still had a net income gain. We only had loses. Mucho money going out, not a cent coming in. No, not even in Iraq. Only great big loses in both blood and treasure.

I am sorry but your attempt to paint the US as an empire is rejected based on reality.

So sorry.

Try again.

John Maynard Keynes.

You are basing your argument on writings of that economic illiterate? The guy who never got even one thing right?

Oh great googly moogly.

I have changed my mind, please do not try again. You are making me feel sorry for your complete lack of any knowledge in this area.

Keynes?

Why not just cite the great works of Marx?

The paper is by Niall Ferguson.

He is doing a survey of the writing on this subject, of whom Keynes was only one of a great many.

I remember liking the movie Men as a horror movie. I realized it probably had some subtext going on, but I decided to just enjoy the creepy weirdness.

John Maynard Keynes, who is the first person he referenced, is.

You can tell a man who is a "progressive" or as I call them, communist by who he hops in bed with.

And you were the one who is pushing the idea that counties go into the Empire business to give enormous amounts of money away. Which is a concept that runs past moronic, took a flying leap over idiot and is currently frenching imbecilic.

The US had a very brief flirtation with Empire when we took over the independent nation of Hawaii. And we benefited financially from it. Which is why countries become empires.

We did not financially benefit from any of the other places we took from the Spanish American war. They were a net drain which is why we cut them loose in under a half a century.

We gained nothing financially from preventing Europe from dragging the world into another of their series of endless wars for 80 years. In fact we paid through the nose to rebuild the place and paid in blood and treasure to keep it peaceful. Sorry, I know you are historically illiterate but could you please show where in the entire stretch of human history any "Empire" did the same? Perhaps name one that paid rent to the countries that they were defending? Rather then demanding tribute?

Words have meanings.

Buy a dictionary.

Britain has a history of people who were opposed to Empire and opposed to the cost, going back to the 19th Century and the “Little Englanders”.

Ferguson is doing a survey of those views, of which Keynes is one of many.

You think the British Empire was a money machine for the UK ?

Ever hear of the Two Power Standard ?

Can you imagine what it would cost for the current day USA to match the navies of the two next largest powers ?

It would dwarf the current defence budget.

Buy a book on Modern European History.

I have to be kidding?

Reverend Wright quotes perennial election buffoon Karl Rove to verify that the USA is an Empire!

THAT is kidding, Reverend.

You want to pretend that Karl is not telling you how it actually is.

Fine.

Argue with this guy.

Re: "Argue with Pat Buchanan"

I liked Buchanan, but he was not electable.

He was a religious and cultural Conservative, and he had no viable path to 270 Electoral Votes.

His Empire book came out 25 years ago.

Buchanan was anti-Free Trade and wanted restricted immigration, but I do not really recall anything else.

From memory, Buchanan objected mostly to the USA being an International Police Force.

The only two countries the USA ever actually governed were Japan and Germany, which we crushed in World War Two.

Thirty years after World War Two, Japan and Germany were the #2 and #3 largest industrial countries in the world, and at peace with the USA.

#1, as you may recall, was the USA.

Ukraine, as you may know, was, and still is, the poorest country in Europe.

The only reason Biden supports them is because hundreds of Democrat politicians and donors have their hand in the cash register.

Corruption is NOT the same thing as Empire.

No.

Buchanan was arguing that the USA had turned into an Empire. And this was before 2001 and the MidEast wars.

Buchanan was opposed to the USA as an Empire.

Buchanan was strongly opposed to NATO expansion. As well as the entire project of the NeoCons in the Mideast, and elsewhere.
