Ukrainian estimates of Russian losses:

Some of those numbers correlate reasonably well with numbers from Ukraine's government, also posted in #17 above.

However, given the fog of war, we can understand that different groups use different definitions (i.e., "casualties") and different methodologies to arrive at numbers that don't necessarily mean exactly the same things.

Russian numbers for their own casualties are, naturally, much less and likely don't include whole groups, such as contract soldiers from other countries.

According to this report, Ukraine's Pres. Zelenskyy says total Ukrainian soldier deaths since February 2022 are 31,000.

US estimates were double that and

Russian claims say Ukraine has lost the same number as Ukraine estimates of Russian casualties -- circa 450,000.

Given now a years' long war of attrition, much of our understanding of who is "winning" or "losing" can be based on which set of numbers we find more believable.

And given Russia's circa 4 to 1 superiority in potential manpower, even if Ukraine's battlefield successes produce Russian casualties of, say, 3 to 1 over Ukrainian casualties, Ukraine is still "losing" in the gruesome long-term accounting numbers tally.

That's why it's important to point out that while Russia had some successes in 2024, year to date -- meaning they've conquered around 30+ square miles of Ukrainian territory -- so far Russian successes have been far less than even 2023 and at a far greater cost to Russia in lost soldiers and equipment.

And that's even with Ukraine's shortages of weapons and ammunition.

Putin's actions in Ukraine have produced the opposite of his stated pretexts for invasions -- to prevent the expansion of NATO.
Finland and Sweden have now joined NATO, and Finland adds 830 miles to Russia's border with NATO, a border which already included:

1. 183 miles with Estonia
2. 133 miles with Latvia
3. 185 miles with Lithuania (at Kaliningrad)
4. 144 miles with Poland (also at Kaliningrad)

In sum, Vlad the Invader has already succeeded in increasing Russia's borders with NATO countries from 645 miles to now 1,475 miles.
Bringing Ukraine into NATO will increase Russia's borders with NATO another roughly 1,300 miles, making the total NATO border circa 2,775 miles.

However, all of that will be counted as just the "cost of victory" in the Russian mindset, if, if, if, Donald Trump is elected and then does what our Democrats are claiming he intends to do --

1. Abandon Ukraine

2. Withdraw from NATO

3. Let Vlad the Invader do "whatever the h*ll he wants to" in Ukraine or anywhere else.

At that point, NATO membership for Ukraine and everyone else will become meaningless -- and such claims are how Pres. Biden hopes to get reelected in November.

I don't think those claims by our Democrats are at all true, but it does seem that many posters on Free Republic would be quite happy to see it happen as claimed.

I've addressed Ukraine's front lines every time the subject comes up.
On this thread, that's in post #56 & #58, so far.

The summary is this: so far in 2024, Russians have added about 30+ square miles to their previously conquered ~33,475 square miles at a cost estimated by Ukrainians and Brits of circa 60,000 Russian casualties and 2,000 vehicles, or roughly 2,000 casualties and 65 vehicles per square mile, so far in 2024.

So far, Russia's gains in 2024 are at half the rate of 2023 and Russia's costs in blood and vehicles are double 2023, per square mile.

The word "pyrrhic" comes to my mind, though it's not yet clear if Russians themselves consider any cost in their own blood and treasure to be too high a price to pay for the gain of a few more square miles of Ukrainian sovereign territory.

As for Ukrainian losses, we don't know those, though Russians claim Ukrainians have lost the same numbers as Ukrainians say Russia lost -- around 450,000 casualties.
Ukrainians admit to 1/3 of Russian casualties overall, though only 1/10 during Russian "Meat Wave" assaults.

Recently, Ukraine's Pres. Zelensky said total Ukrainian military deaths since February 2022 were about 31,000.

According to this source, Ukraine's military today is roughly the same size overall as Russia's:

1. 1,000,000 active duty personnel
2. 2,000,000 reserves
