The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I have some kinda bulbs that keep coming up each year since I have been here. No idea what they are, because the horses eat them before they bloom. My lawn-mowers are indescriminant.

You know the story about the guy throwing the grenade into the tent, right?

Apparently John Allen Muhammed, the elder of the two snipers that terrorized DC, MC and VA did the same freakin' thing in the 91 Gulf War...

Things to keep in mind.

When gardening doesn't work and plants die, we have no required emotional expressions. Just throw it on the compost pile (or let it rot where it is.)

Plants require much less maintenance than Jr. They will get along without near as much supervision but if the supervision is too little see item 1.

1 good homegrown tomato is worth 10 store bought tomatoes. We don't try to grow them in small quantities for economics. Some things are just plain good. It's quality of life. If the plant dies see item 1.

On days when you just can't deal with Jr. anymore, remember plants don't talk back, act up, become surly or bring home detestible dates (remember my kids are 17 and 27.) It's acceptable to violently smash your spade into the ground all around plants to take out frustrations. If you take out your agression on the plant and it dies remember, see item 1.

Last but not least, even a single flower, nicely timed, is bound to win brownie points occasionally with Mrs. Stormhands. :-)

Think any of that will take some of the work out of it?

Our afternoon talk radio jock just said that (Sniper) John Allen Muhammed threw a grenade into his fellow soldiers tent during the 1991 Gulf War. But it doesn't show in his official record...

You know, I heard the end of that report I guess when I left to pick up Myranda from school. I thought I must have not gotten the whole story and misunderstood something. But, that was exactly what I THOUGHT the reporter said.

I used to have some goats living around me that were kind to me like that. They kept my rose bushes trimmed so nicely that it looked like I'd paid someone to come trim to the exact height that those critters could reach.

That helps muchly! And don't worry, I've thrown away lots of dead plants. Mrs. Stormhands can kill plastic houseplants. That will be a big bonus for having my m-i-l here. She can grow anything.

My comment about the work was a bit tongue in cheek, 'cause I'm actually enjoying working in the yard this year. In part, since we got the siding on the house last year, thinking about the yard is a respectable thing to do.

But I also think that the diet and exercise program I've been on (for the most part) has a lot to do with my attitude.

I simply feel better. I'm consuming very little salt, sugar and white flour (I splurge sometimes on the weekends). My arthritis has hardly bothered me at all since January.

That's been a big plus (along with the weight loss) in helping me to stick with it this time.

Chuckling at this.

I typically get people accusing me of going all health-food-fanaticky on them when I talk about yard work. But, you just pretty much cited a lot of my reasons for yard work. Unfortunately, I love to cook and then that messes up my weight/appearance/self esteem all that garbage.

I found out years ago that if I can cut out potatoes, white flour and excess dairy products that I have little trouble with joint pain and stiffness. Additionally, my doc says that I ought to get out and walk etc to minimize the arthritic stuff. But, I won't walk just for the heck of it. However, I'll get out in the yard and move around and dig and carry stuff and generally get a lot of exercise without meaning to. So, that fills in for my walking recommendation. And I eat heathier if I grow fresh stuff. So, gardening helps me to eat better as well as makes me more disciplined about exercise and fresh air.

My side benefit is that when I work outside all day is that even if I weren't eating healthier foods I'd be better off because I don't spend the time in the kitchen cooking and then eating and packing away 3 times the quantity of food.

And, after all these years, I really do enjoy gardening a lot. But, when I first started out I didn't know anything. No one in my family or background gardened so I had NO experience and no one to call and ask for help. It was largely hit and miss on that learning curve. Hence Item 1 on the list.

Uruk-Hai Unhappy with Portrayal in Films
By Brian Briggs

Los Angeles, CA - The Uruk-Hai Anti-Defamation League (UADL) announced that it would be boycotting the premiere of The Return of the King, and would picket theaters because they are unhappy with their portrayal so far in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Kidnapping of short movie-goers was also threatened.

Tired of being portrayed as warlike in
recent films an angry Uruk-Hai pickets
outside
a local movie theater

The group demanded changes to The Two Towers DVD as well as the upcoming The Return of the King film. "We feel that more emphasis should be put on the fact that we didn't eat Merry and Pippin," said Wratch of the UADL. "We'd also like included the scene where Lerd and Ugol discuss the geo-political ramifications of an alliance between Sauron and Saruman that was shot but was cut from the film."

The Uruk-Hai have been trying to improve their image for years, running "Man Flesh Bad" educational commercials during popular orc TV shows like Everybody Love Shagrat, but all those efforts have been destroyed by the new films.

"Our depiction as warlike and evil creatures makes it difficult for us to get jobs in this post-war economy," continued Wratch. He noted that the unemployment rate among Uruk-Hai nears 56%, much higher than the national average. Most Uruk-Hai are employed at either Uh! Beverages Inc., makers of the White Hand energy drink, or in the lumber industry in the Pacific northwest.

Not everyone agrees. "I'll tell you why they can't get jobs. They keep beheading all my customers and eating their flesh. It's kinda disgusting when other patrons are trying to eat," said Graham Entman, manager of a Carls Jr.

The producers of the films think they are creating an accurate image of the orcs. "We need to be faithful to Tolkien's vision. Sure some consider him to be anti-Uruk-Hai, but we're not going to create some politically correct version where the Nazgûl make rainbows with their swords, and the Uruk-Hai play chess all day just because some orcs have their feelings hurt."

Some of the most hurtful comments center on the slaying of Boromir. "We get so much grief for killing Boromir. It's always 'Why'd you have to kill Boromir?' Don't they understand we were just following orders? And, Boromir was after the ring and tried to hurt Frodo, so in actuality it was really a good thing we killed him," said Wratch.

"I think the Uruk-Hai are reaping what they sow. They were bred to be destroyers of the world of men, and now that they ended up on the losing side they want us to feel sorry for them," explained Harold Torquist of Aurora, Illinois. But the Uruk-Hai don't want pity, they just want to be understood.

"Ever since the Lord of the Rings premiered, people are so frightened of me. They'll avoid me when I walk down the sidewalk, cabs will pass me by, and cops keep pulling me over for no reason. OK, I admit maybe the cops are pulling me over because of the smeared blood all over the driver's side door, but the other stuff is still true and it hurts," said one Uruk-Hai.

Complaints to the UADL about Uruk-Hai harassment have increased 47% since The Fellowship of the Ring was released.

Done! Say, we have another ongoing thread for all RoTK spoilers and spy reports. If you like spoilers, rumors and spy reports, I would ping you to that too, but I know some folk don't want to know... so it is a seperate list.

It has been a long dry spell without news so the thread has been quiet a few weeks.

To find it and check it out, click my name and look for the Bookmark on the link list.... it is only a few down from the top.

gotta admit *ducks for cover...* I have yet to see TTT. the only reason I haven't seen it is because of the volume levels at my local theaters. too darn loud! guess I have sensitive ears...waiting for it to come out on DVD when I can watch it in the comfort of my own home at an appropriate decibel level.

I'm afraid there are still more whackjobs like Mo still in the military. They're ticking timebombs, but they have to be handled with kid gloves due to PC reasons. Back in the "good old days", a GI blanket party would straighten out clowns like that before things got too serious.

Hello friends.

I just had to put Logan down at the vets. I am waiting for a friend to get here to help me bury him. I brought him home, and he is in the truck.

It was completely unrelated to his toe. His back went out and I found him paralyzed, not in pain, but unable to stand. Unknowable to anyone he had a ticking time bomb in his back, and it went off today.

Right around his hips he had a weak spot in his back that had been developed for some time, long enough that his body had built a bridge of bone between two of his vertebra in an attempt to stabilize it. That little bridge was weak, and it wouldn't take much to break it. Could have done it jumping down off the couch. Could have broken because he was trying to hop around with his bandaged back leg. So in that way, maybe it was related to his toe.

The vet said he would never walk again.

I am sad, of course. I didn't think it would be him that went first, especially after the clean bill of health he got on Saturday! - (Or expected continued good life after tomorrow's toe surgery!)

He was a good dog!

Logan, two years old...

Last Saturday... purdy close to 16 years old.

Grieve not for me for it has been ordained, that my journey here be short.

MISSING OUR DOGS

Old Men miss many dogs.
They only live a dozen years,if that,
And by the time you are sixty, there are several
The names of which evoke remembering smiles.
You see them in your mind, heads cocked and seated.
You see them by your bed, or in the rain,
Or sleeping by the fire by nights
And always dying.

They are remembered like departed children
Though they gave vastly more than ever they took,
And finally you're seeing dogs that look like them.
They pass you in the street but never turn
Although it seems they should, their faces so familiar.
Old men miss many dogs.

Gotta go for awhile, my friend will be here soon... I will be back :~)

HOD: great posting of the article, thanks, know what you mean about having a "young 'un". When Susan went to the Vet's last year to get the "old timer's" dog food, she came home with a kitten/young cat - 9 months old, raised at the vets. The dog is 11 and the other cat is 14. So she had a great time attempting to get the old cat to play (virtually no success) and snuggling with dog (that worked pretty well except Samantha's demeanor was like Giget's-what the heck is going on). They're great friends now. The old cat doesn't do friends, heck, she still doesn't recognize me. Good luck in your quest to find suitable accomodations for Niner.

It is easier this way, the way I look at it, when something catastrophic happens and there is no grey area... It was clear what needed to be done and it needed to be done now. Easier to play God when there is only one choice.

Zulu is harder to decide how to handle, so far anyway.

So I am OK with how Logan's life went. He was a good dog, He had a good life! Nevertheless it is hardly fair, To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

From my Gun Dog book:

Regarding dogs, I like them all - pointers, setters, retrievers, spaniels... I have had good ones and bad of several kinds. Most of the bad ones were my fault and most of the good ones would have been good under any circumstances.

Thank goodness this happened before the toe surgery tomorrow, if his back was a ticking time bomb just waiting to go off! The surgery was going to be expensive, and no doubt a bit painful, having a toe removed! - What if I had done that, and then had his back go out next week?

I understand...you didn't have to put him through a painful situation. A blessing.

I am hoping that the pin number for my ATM card I ordered for the contributor's account will be here tomorrow. I got the card Sat and it said it would arrive 2-3 days afterward. That will make it much easier for me to purchase the items. No need to withdraw, hoping to have enough...

Your Logan lived a long time - no doubt, in part, because of what an excellent job you did caring for him and how much he was loved.

I don't know how I'm going to face this when the time comes for me (my thirteen year-old male Pembroke Welsh Corgi is more important to me than almost anything, except for a few humans I'm fond of) - but seeing the grace with which you've handled this is a model for me.

Thank you for that.
