Word For The Day, Thursday, August 21, 2003
The Verbivores | 8/21/03 | Teacher

Posted on 08/21/2003 5:27:06 AM PDT by RikaStrom

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

jocular; \Joc"u*lar\ adjective:
jocularity; noun
jocularity; adverb

1. Characterized by joking.
2. Given to joking.

Blues lyrics are no less dark when ("Nobody loves me but my mother / And she could be jiving too" -- B. B. King).
--Roy Blount Jr., "There's More to Southern Humor Than Foot-Long Pecan Rolls," New York Times, December 11, 1994

Etymology: [Latin iocul ris, droll, from ioculus, diminutive of iocus, joke. See yek- in Indo-European Roots.]

Good Morning Students. Welcome to class!

Class is now in session. The rules are simple; you get a grade if you use the WFTD in a sentence, haiku, limerick, or quatrain. You get a "+" if you make a link, or make the teacher laugh, or you offer the appropriate bribes. I hold the grade book; the whip and chair.

On July 25, a 19-year-old college freshman from California was bored out of his wits waiting at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport after his original flight to Los Angeles had been overbooked.
Deshon Brown admits that he used his cell phone to call airport dispatchers that Friday shortly after 7 a.m. and threatened in a very low voice, "I'm going to blow up the Delta terminal at 9 a.m."

I can honestly say that no matter how bored I was at the airport I would never pull such an asinine stunt. This irresponsible adult thought this would be a jocular way to pass the time, he thought wrong… if you can call his behavior thinking. Perhaps his 10 years in prison will give him a chance to reflect on his absolute stupidity. I'm sure his parents are proud.

Prank call at airport could connect to prison time

With a jocular thought
This prank call he did plot
T'was no laughing matter
'Tis years in the slammer!

No jocularity in the cafeteria? No wonder kids today are so miserable in school.

SHHHHHHHHH! Parents criticize school's quiet lunch plan

Could you imagine what this group would be like with that kind of a policy?????????

First? Top Ten?

Don't you have to be very small to be a jocular? Or is that avuncular? I'll ask my dad's brother.

Oh bats breath. What an idiotic idea. Students only have their lunch break to socialize with their friends (at least if teachers are running the classrooms correctly). Someone went powermad trying to stop a rowdy few.

A+

Mornin'. I was out with the flu (not swine). Anyway, today's word mixes well with an observation: when you sleep while having a fever, dreams tend to become a bit crazier, less stolid, and the humour that results is the definition of jocularity. I had a dream about being a fly on the wall during Gore's attempt to steal the election, following their circular logic, and then one about being on the crew of the first German Submarine. Both will make a helluva screenplay, though the Submarine dream is most lucid right now.

I'm just cranky this morning.

Facing me is one of the things I hate most to do in my life - updating my resume. The worst part is that all I have is hard copy, can not find it on my hard drive anywhere, it must be on the drive of my old system. So I have to retype the entire thing.

at this time, i'm not so sure about it. My agent got back from Maine yesterday and before I even get the dern report, I get an email that MY presence is required over the next week or so.

So I'm trying to schedule three days where I can get up there and do what I gotsta do.

Some work on the bunker project needs my explicit approval, signature, check, etc..

I hope all the parents sue that school-that policy can't be good for normal kids! Hubby said that is the way lunch is in OCS, with the upper class monitors marching up and down the aisles yelling "Shut up, cadet" at anyone who even breathes too loud. They also made the lower classmen all pick up their forks and put a bite of food in their mouths in perfect unison. Is that next for these poor kids?

i am not sure how many of you have been in a kids lunchroom recently. they don't have SILENT lunch, but they have to be quiet at the kids school or they will lose recess. they have a small cafeteria and lunch is eaten in shifts (no food is served, it is lunches brought from home) and they have a half hour to eat, if they go up to buy milk or snacks, that requires a wait in line, and less time to eat. i know where these people are coming from with this and it isn't ridiculous at all. you get a room full of kids who are just being their regular jocular selves and it sounds like PANDEMONIUM!

The Catholic school my daughter went to allowed talking, but not screaming or anything like that. They just made the disruptive kids eat in a small room off the cafeteria. Usually they didn't disrupt any more after being made to eat alone.

i guess bc this school has 800 kids and a tiny cafeteria and they have half hour shifts for lunch starting from 11 am til 12:30 or 1:00pm, they have to move them in, GET THEM TO EAT and then move them out. i think that they expect the socialization to take place at recess. they want them eating during this time. truly i have seen kids there barely eat a thing in the alloted time, bc they are too busy chattering and socializing. then they have to keep going til 3pm. i am just saying that i can see, in practical terms, since i am picturing the St James lunchroom, why they did this and it doesn't make them nazis or child haters, which is being implied on that thread.
