Amish turn to Silicon Valley for better buggy lights

INTERCOURSE, Pennsylvania (AP) -- The front of an Amish buggy may seem an unlikely place to find state-of-the-art Silicon Valley innovation.

But developments in light-emitting diode (LED) technology have allowed a company headquartered in the heart of Lancaster County's Amish community to create an alternative to traditional buggy headlights -- a light that lasts about 16 times longer than incandescent headlights.

Incredibly, many Amish aren't even putting a simple orange reflector on their buggies. A slow-moving buggy is no match for a vehicle traveling at any rate of speed in the evening. I've seen other buggies lit up like a Christmas tree, too. It's all based on what each area's Bishop allows...
