[history]
Early last evening I got to see about 20 minutes from “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” Peter Jackson’s third and final installment in his epic rendering of the Tolkien books.
As we could have predicted, the scenes a few of us had the pleasure of screening were top notch — indicating that Jackson and the folks at New Line Cinema will go boldly into this year’s Oscar race with every intention of winning.

I would like to take a moment to ask for donations.
It should be clear to all conservatives by now that the left intends to demonize us. They don't just disagree with us, they hate us. And worse, they want to get other people to hate us.
Places like Free Republic drive the left batty.
Please donate. Thanks for your consideration.

I am really hoping for not only a great movie here, but a winner of Oscars for them.... I understood before but I will not understand if they don't win this time!

You were up early this morning!
Do we know what cities the special screenings of FoTR EE, TTT EE, and RoTK will be in yet? I haven't been able to find out.

What's the countdown?
I'm currently living off of the 2 1/2 minute trailer, and need something else to go on.

Hair,
I am keen to learn that myself. I don't think they have announced it yet. I will travel as far as needs be to see them. If you hear something - be sure to post it here!
I assume everyone has heard the news from AICN on ROTK's running time? It's about three hours and thirty minutes. Bring your catheter.
Of course, I would go if it were ten hours.

At least it is two digits now! Last time I checked we were in three digits!

I went frame-by-frame on the trailer last night.
I'm thinking that PJ isn't going to cover Frodo's capture.
However, the shot of the Rohirrim lined up, ready to charge looks massively impressive.

I'm thinking that PJ isn't going to cover Frodo's capture. You think? Why do you think? He has Sam and Frodo dressed in orc-armor in the toys Weta came out with....
The moment at the gate when the rider brings out the mithril shirt and for a moment they think all is lost... is one of my very favorite parts.... and great cinema if PJ were to let us wonder, as he is prone to do..... I don't think he'll cut that.

If I'm reading the trailer footage right, it looks like a shot of Frodo & Sam looking at the green alarm light sent up, presumably from the Watchers at Cirith Ungol. Frodo & Sam aren't dressed in orc armor, they're wearing their standard gear.
At that point in the book, Frodo had already been rescued by Sam, and they were dressed in orc armor...when they set off the alarm.
Unless, PJ had them set off the alarm once they get to Minas Morgul..
I don't know...something about it is confusing me.

Special Extended Edition The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Tuesday, December 16
One-time-only marathon of both the Extended Edition prints followed by the first screenings of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
There you have it. The answer is yes!
To: maquiladora
One thing that jumped off the screen right away: Howard Shores terrific score seems even better used in Return. I hope so. I found the score in the previous two flicks to be a bit too low key. I'm thinking the third film needs some heroic sounding music along of the lines of "Les Preludes."

I think the green light is the Witch King's signal to Barad Dur that he has left to go to war.
To: maquiladora
Hmmmm..... I suppose it is my duty to at least ~try~ to get tickets to that.
I almost wish the marathon was ~after~ the initial premier... for a showing later in the run. So I am not exhausted from trip and six hours of sitting on premier night.

I found the score in the previous two flicks to be a bit too low key.Heh.... Oh dear, PJ....

Well, it might be 3hrs 30mins. But I wouldn't put the house on it. It might be a little shorter, it might be a lot shorter. I think about 3hrs 15mins seems right to me.
To: HairOfTheDog
Exhausting indeed! Not only in terms of the amount of screentime, but ROTK is going to be pretty emotional in its own right. People will be coming out like zombies!
To: maquiladora
People will be coming out like zombies! 'xactly.... I almost hope I don't get tickets... And if they run it at the Cinerama like they did before.... I won't be able to... they cancelled internet sales and you had to buy them at the box office within about a two hour window. I live over an hour from there and don't see myself camping out up there.
Will prolly watch the two EE's at home while getting ready for the midnight show here close to home...

But it doesn't explain the two gargoyle-like statues on either side of the entranceway. I was under the impression that those were the Watchers. Could they be just the standard "decorations" of Minas Morgul?

...Then lightning erupts from the roatating Morgul-spire, and the great cry of the ever-dying Lord of the Ring-wraiths issues from the stony maw of the city gate. The War of the Ring at last begins...

Here's the actual text from Chapter 8 - The Stairs of Cirith Ungol. Looks like you're right:
But it was too late. At that moment the rock quivered and trembled beneath them. The great rumbling noise, louder than ever before, rolled in the ground and echoed in the mountains. Then with searing suddenness there came a great red flash. Far beyond the eastern mountains it leapt into the sky and splashed the lowering clouds with crimson. In that valley of shadow and cold deathly light it seemed unbearably violent and fierce. Peaks of stone and ridges like notched knives sprang out in staring black against the uprushing flame in Gorgoroth. Then came a great crack of thunder.
And Minas Morgul answered. There was a flare of livid lightnings: forks of blue flame springing up from the tower and from the encircling hills into the sullen clouds. The earth groaned; and out of the city there came a cry. Mingled with harsh high voices as of birds of prey, and the shrill neighing of horses wild with rage and fear, there came a rending screech, shivering, rising swiftly to a piercing pitch beyond the range of hearing. The hobbits wheeled round towards it, and cast themselves down, holding their hands upon their ears.
As the terrible cry ended, falling back through a long sickening wail to silence, Frodo slowly raised his head. Across the narrow valley, now almost on a level with his eyes, the walls of the evil city stood, and its cavernous gate, shaped like an open mouth with gleaming teeth, was gaping wide. And out of the gate an army came.

"74 days 18 hours 42 min.... *sigh* " Exactly my sentiments. Since summer 2001 I have been in anxious anticipation of each movie. March 2002 was a real down month because TTT left the screens and December was still nine months away. Funny ... I'm a grown 46-year old man with three children and a great career ... and my life has been defined by LOTR.
When I saw FOTR the third time, it was a weekday matinee after Christmas. I was alone and I noticed another guy who was alone. Alone? Grown men watching FOTR alone at 11 AM on Wednesday? I asked him how many times -- he guiltily held up three fingers. I asked him why he was alone -- his girlfriend felt that once was enough. Then I asked him if LOTR was his absolutely favorite book as a teenager, and he assured me YES. I then told him that I carried images from that book in my head constantly, and Peter Jackson's movie had finally brought them to life.

Good story Tom, and I think that could be repeated many times all over the country and all over the world! And it's true, these movies really do make a great visualisation of Tolkien's writing, I can't wait to see ROTK. It's going to be stunning to behold.

I first read the trilogy when I was 12, and it's stayed with me all this time, remaining just as vivid as the first time I read them.
PJ's adaptations have only increased my love for Tolkien's writings.
