From the article:
Mertz, 59, owns a bed and breakfast and horse stable in Long Beach. He ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1972, 1974, 1998, 2000 and 2002.
The defeated candidate was despondent when reached at his home Tuesday evening.
"Today I was diagnosed with a dual aneurism and face certain death," Mertz said. "I will be selling my home and moving to Montana.
"Mississippi is last in a number of categories for good reasons. A disproportionate number of its people are racist, dumb and lazy.

Boy, I'm glad Lott won. : )

You're probably right, though not definitely right. The Lott name is a good one to have in Mississippi (though they're not related). Also, Mike Lott is the strongest candidate Taylor has ever faced, having won three terms to the state legislature. Even if he doesn't win (which he probably won't), maybe he'll poll well enough to get Taylor to seek another office in the near future. I figure it's worth a try.
Mertz is a sorry candidate. I volunteered to work for him twice and he never responded. He never had a campaign in either race.He thought everything could be done on the internet.I hope Lott will be more aggressive. Taylor will be tough to beat, but I think it can be done.

Gene Taylor may be a Democrat, but he's one of the good ones. If you check, he voted to impeach Komrade Clinton.
